It is similar to the presidential ascension. Recall LBJ being sworn in as president while Jackie stood by in the suit stained with JFK’s blood. Time is of the essence you see

Time is of the essence for non-landed titles with no actual responsibilities or political offices? Please.

Yes.

That is why wills are read as quickly after a persons death as possible in the UK

That is why a newborn child’s name must be registered within 72 hours of birth

That is why yiu can’t have a pretend wedding ceremony

Different countries have different traditions and requirements.

Don’t like it; don’t get in the line of succession for a non-landed title

Just last week, the Royal Family released a picture of Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth enjoying a walk on the grounds of Frogmore House, Windsor. At the time, I saw it as a Pre-Easter photo release but now...do you think they were walking around that place knowing Prince Philip would die any day and start to make plans for where he was to be buried?

I think the Queen’s been living there for a year straight and it was a convenient, pretty, place to walk. But maybe.

The mourning period is pretty serious in the UK for a death like this. Parliament can’t pass laws, and I believe businesses have to close for a period of time. There’s no comparison to anything like it in the US. I agree with PP that it feels tone deaf given the amount of deaths due to COVID in the last year.

What if Prince Philip had died April 9 2011 instead of April 9 2021? Would that mean William and Kate's wedding would have to be postponed?

Likewise, what if he died April 9, 2015 or April 9, 2018. Would that mean there would be absolutely no fuss over the births of Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis? Nothing announced by Buckingham Palace? No photo shoot at the hospital?

JFC, can't you people take your hate of everything in life and let it rest for a day? The woman lost her husband of 70 plus years, it's a big deal for that family. She loved him, presumably his extended family loved him and it is a big loss for them. Fine something else to do with your bitter, soulless selves.

The morning or the day before the wedding - no cancellation. Anything before that - potentially.

Yes, yes, photos released and no big to-do. Like Eugenie did with her birth.

Well he didn't die on those dates. Have you got a time machine you want to test or something?

Who cares? They are all a bunch of jerks! The whole lot.

It means no celebration, birthday pictures, or real recognition for W+K's 10th anniversary.

I have to say, I actually understand this tradition historically, but it seems incredibly out of touch to enter a 30 day period of mourning for the 99 year old Prince Phillip dying of what appears to be natural causes and neglect to somehow also honor all the Britons who have died of COVID. Just bad timing.

Serious question: I have no idea what practices might be normal or ideal given that the pandemic is ongoing. I get that things were done here to honor our losses when Biden became president, but that was a natural transition point, and I’m sure that things will be done in the future as well. In this instance, at what point would you have expected some sort of activity to “honor all the Britons who have died of COVID”? How would you then expect the additional people who die to be honored?

I haven’t given this much thought, but I’ve imagined that at some point, we’ll declare the pandemic over, and then have both mourning rituals and celebrations of some sort.

Thanks! Now I have a better understanding of the criticisms.

He’s been dying for a few days at least - the only explanation possible for this pre-recorded interview where Anne is dressed in mourning black clothes and jewels.

CBS Morning show included some of Prince Philip's "gaffes" over the years. Anybody think he clearly is the family member that wondered about the color of Archie's skin?

That was clearly Will or Charles

Oddly, I think it was not either of them. I suspect it was Andrew. Who is a gross person anyway.

Princess Anne?

Here’s the full interview of Anne - it’s very good

Isn't this the same thing as all the newspapers already have obituaries of all famous people pretty much written. I even want to say they have had his funeral planned for quite some time now. Even with the quarantine, they probably started to make plans for a quarantine funeral.

I also want to say QEII, Prince Charles and maybe even Prince William already have their funerals planned? I thought I read that somewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if Princess Anne also did one of these video tributes for her mom when that time comes.

At last Philip did something worthwhile.

Every year the public is going to mourn Phillip's death on this date. EVERY. YEAR. I just...wow.

I mean...really. This is insane.

It really isn’t a big deal. No one is going to mourn his death every year. More like, oh, PP died on this day.

For real. And it’s not like people publicly celebrate Charles and Camillas wedding anniversary.

Charles and Camilla likely celebrate their anniversary.

Now it will be clouded by his father’s death.

You wouldn’t want your anniversary clouded by a death.

Good grief. You are mental. Diana had no revenge! He was going to die sooner or later! And Charles and Camila can celebrate in other ways!
