he Duke of Edinburgh has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.

Prince Phillip, husband and consort to Queen Elizabeth II, recently spent four weeks in hospital, his longest stay ever.

The Palace said in a statement: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

Prince Philip - who was often said to keep a firm grip over Royal Family affairs - retired from royal duties in 2017 aged 96.

So sad for the Queen. They’ve been together for over 70 years.

I wonder how things will change now that his “firm grip” is over.

Sad so close to the Queen's birthday and almost his 100th birthday.

Rest in Peace after a long, good life.

I hope they can have a proper, royal funeral.

He’s been out of action at Wood Farm for at least 5 years

So close to 100! Just a number, though. Striking looks as a young man and really interesting family history and upbringing.

The queen will be very close behind. That’s always how it goes. They simply can’t live without each other.

They can’t - the UK is still under strict Covid lockdown. They ‘just’ opened up weddings to 6 people and funerals to 15

How many people are currently allowed to attend a funeral?

The current national lockdown rules on attending funerals mean services are allowed to go ahead with no more than 15 mourners.

The 15 doesn’t even start til Monday but here’s my list:

Nine who absolutely will show:
The Queen
Prince Charles
Duchess Camilla
Prince Andrew
Princess Anne
Prince Edward
Countess Sophie
Prince William
Duchess Kate
Archbishop of Canterbury (religious leader)

5 other possibles. Eugenie and Zara both are post-partum in a pandemic. Meghan is heavily pregnant in a pandemic. I don’t think their spouses will show without them.

Not really. True of widowers but not widows. But she is also near the end of her life. 94.

Maybe they will prolong the burial service? Wouldn’t surprise me. Either way, Rest In Peace.

The UK is not going to open up for crowds and parades for another 60 days minimum. They’re not going to freeze him and wait.

Very sad. No matter your thoughts on the Monarchy, a husband of 70 years, a father, a grandfather has died today. While he lived a full life, it is heartbreaking for his family. He was definitely a source of strength (and fun!) for the Queen throughout her reign.
