If someone asked her with concern how dark skinned her baby would be, that is not "a faint shade of racism." Are you kidding? (I obviously have no idea if this happened, but the allegation is not trivial from my perspective.)

If it was Charles (who also walked her down the aisle remember?) - it might have been old person cluelessness along the same lines as referring to people of Asian descent as "Orientals".
Perhaps it wasn't intended to be offensive, it might have just been curious politeness that was spun out of control. Given the track record of these two grifters (H&M) I lean towards it being innocuous comment by out of touch royalty.

Or it might have been William, we don't know. What's also interesting is that Harry, who overheard the comments, chose to share them with Meghan -- who would have been more directly hurt by such comments.

While the comments might not have been intended to be offensive, they were in no way "innocuous ". Racism, even casual, built-into-the-culture racism is never innocuous.

It's not racist to speculate on whose looks your grandchild (if it was Charles) might inherit. This happens ALL the time. I am sure the family ruminated on ginger hair as well.

Many people who have never been personally, negatively impacted by racism would likely agree with you.

Right.

But here’s the thing: anyone who has felt racism assumes otherwise innocent comments are racist. That doesn’t mean they actually were racist comments. All it means is the person interprets it that way.

So, your argument is that white people, and others privileged enough to have never experienced racism themselves should be the ones who get to determine what is “racist” and what is not? Nah.
People who benefit from racism don’t get to be the only judges of what is and isn’t racist. It’s mighty white of you to suggest this though.
I’m sure that your suggestion that anyone personally impacted by racism is necessarily biased is “innocent”.

Because only whites are racist amiright? It's a two way street even when you twist definitions.

You read the “and others....” part too, right?

Without knowing the context and who said it, how can we know if it's accurate? Meghan and Harry have an agenda they are pushing. It serves their purpose to have everyone view the Royal Family as evil and racist.

Exactly this. Harry and Meghan have a credibility problem. So when says - my husband told me someone who shall remain nameless wondered about the skin color of the baby, i cant help but remember all the lies and half truths they told in that interview and their accusation just doesnt make a lot of sense.

I find it far more interesting that she didnt dispute that she threw a fit because she didnt get to wear the tiara she wanted to. Poor, poor meghan, amiright?

While I think that if she had named the person, people would be screaming about that, as cancel culture or what ever the phase of the moment might be.

Its like finding out that your old 90 yr old neighbor in Panama was actually a Nazi guard who did horrible things. Why? Why do frail old men turn out to be horrible people instead of nice harmless lovable jolly person like say Santa Clause? Why?

This world is so unfair and terrible.

He was a racist?

That is too bad. After so much privilege, wealth and the easy job of breeding the queen, why did he not educate himself and become a better person?

He was almost 100 years old. How many woke centenarians are there? Not saying it's okay, just that he's partly a product of his time, and old people are not as mentally agile as younger people.

+1 Seriously! Some of these woke folks are going to be in for a shock when they're several decades older and being judged by younger generations.

Not really. I’ve made many mistakes in my life but I’ve been on the right side of history for the things that matter.

How do you know? When those of us now in our fifties were trying to be colorblind, we were doing what Dr. King and other civil rights told us to do. Now, we are attacked for the same. You have no idea if your positions will hold up or if someone will think that you were part of a new Red Guard or a new version of McCarthyism.

NP - first, Megan Markle is not dark. She barely looks bi-racial. But didn't all of us Royalwatchers kind of wonder what their babies would look like when they got together? It had nothing to do with racism and everything to do with her long dark hair and his bright red hair. Yeah, I had a hard time imagining it.

Absolutely disgusted by this article. Wonder how much Meghan paid for this oh-so-obvious PR piece.

And the fact that Vanity Fair would run this in the wake of Philip's funeral. Shame on you VF... but even moreso, shame on Meghan.

I’m not sure what the writer was going for. It makes the Sussexes look like even bigger spoiled brats than they are.

So, I guess you’ve never wondered if a baby would look like one of their grandparents?

You seem sincere, and I’m really not sure how to explain how racism and color-ism can play out.

1. Surely you have some sense that at least some Black people have been negatively impacted by racism.
2. Is it so difficult to imagine that a family of literal colonizers who married only other white Protestants, and quite often other descendants of Queen Victoria, prior to Meghan, might look at his maternal grandmother and mutter something nasty?
3. Is it at least plausible to entertain the idea that this type of curiosity might have a different tinge — compared to, say, hair color or other racially neutral traits? And that this type of discussion might be multi-layered and hurtful— intentionally or not?

Just to shift back to the original topic: I remember feeling very heartened when I saw the picture of Harry, Meghan, and Archie, with the Queen, Prince Philip, and Meghan’s mum — because seeing that picture felt like progress.

You're sweet to spell this out for the PP. I don't bother anymore - a lot of these posters are coming from cultures and societies where it is considered perfectly fine to practice colorism to the point that it is endemic in relationships and families form the moment they're born.

They won't get it, because its acceptable to them to look down on someone based on caste which is determined by color and heritage.

Well that was about 4 pages too long.

I’m not sure why VF would think this was going to be a page turner. Same old story.

Today is Queen's B.day.
Yahoo news posted a piece where they used the words to describe Prince Phillip death a "tragic death".
That made me wonder if this is wrong? To use the term like that when a 100 year old person who lived a full life of luxury and died
of an old age in one of his palaces.. is it really tragic? ..

Aren't they discounting truly tragic losses? You know what they are. This is truly not tragic. It is sad, that is for sure, but it is neither untimely not particularly tragic if you ask me. Tragic death comes either from some sudden tragic event or is very untimely

The tragic death isn't the only thing that will have an effect on the monarch's birthday celebrations, however, as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has resulted in the cancellation of the Trooping the Colour, a June event marking the Queen's birthday.
