Again, I ask what are those norms? I understand wanting to wear the clothing of the opposite sex, cutting your hair short if you are trans male...I'm not understanding the gender norms in terms of demeanor/relationships. What male demeanor gender norms can't women in the time also exhibit? Same with relationships? |
I just want to get to a point where we are all just humans. That we don't need to identify ourselves as one gender or another and that we can just be who we are without having to say "I'm _________" |
Another straight white male Hollywood success story. |
If you can’t beat them, join them, or so it has been said. |
What do you mean by conforming to gender norms for men in terms of demeanor and relationships? In this day and age, what are the gender norms for men in terms of demeanor and relationships? What are the gender norms for women in terms of demeanor and relationships? Not the PP, but I’d think gender norms are what passable transgender people live as and exhibit. Again, I ask what are those norms? What male demeanor gender norms can't women in the time also exhibit? Same with relationships? Even clothing norms are difficult to define. I see trans women wearing tight dresses, high heels, make up, long hair etc. I am a heterosexual married female with kids, and it has to be a wedding or royal gala before I'll get out of jeans and a t-shirt to wear heels or make-up. Am I failing to live up to female gender norms? |
Ellen page identifies as transgender and has surgery

Am I failing to live up to female gender norms? Interesting point. DP. I’m confused. On the one hand, we’re supposed to throw gender norms out the window, right? No pink or blue. Etc. Then trans women seem to adopt a hyper-feminine, clearly girly aesthetic. Kaitlin Jenner had a glam room and dresses in tight dresses and stillettos with heavy makeup and fake nails. I’m a hetero woman, and I never dress as girly as she does. I’m glad Page is doing what makes him feel comfortable. |
I hope he’s more comfortable in his body now. Whenever I see a picture of him all I see is stress; jaw and shoulder tension. |
Yes, he did always look so uncomfortable. All good wishes to him for a happy new life. |
Agreed - looked tense, uncomfortable, slouching. |
Hopefully Page is happier now. I still feel bad for the lesbian ex-wife though. Unfortunately, Page might be disappointed by how few straight women want to date people without penises. |
Page doesn’t actually look happy on the Time cover. (But maybe that’s because Page is trying to project being a tough, masculine man?) |
Happy for them, but it’s so strange to process how different they look. She was so feminine looking at one point and the transformation is just, wow. |
Really? I didn’t think Ellen Page was ever that feminine looking. Honestly, the only real difference I see is a short haircut. |
+1. I'm curious to see him in acting roles now. I admit I never loved him as an actor before -- always just seemed awkward and kind of stilted (as many former child actors do, so that's what I attributed it to) -- curious whether he will now seem a little more natural in roles. Hope he is happy in his new life! |
