I agree but thats another topic. The counseling is really weak. The school dumps all the issues on the counselors and think its being handled. They mean well but they just aren't up to the task, and maybe the task isn't one they should shoulder on their own anyway. |
This could happen at any school.
Sound familiar.... You sta parents think you are so high and mighty... |
Hasn't yet... |
GDS has had it's share of problems, but the HS counselor and Dean of Students are both amazing, proactive people who do a great job of dealing with whatever issues arise. They certainly aren't dismissive, ever. |
It's not true. The poster who said this (in an earlier thread) later said that it wasn't the actual name of the dance, but that a class officer had called it ghat. Apparently according to the poster the kid was admonished for the inappropriate attempt at humor but the poster felt more discipline should have been imposed. About 7-8 years ago there was a dance where the boys wore crazy colored pants and the girls wore yoga pants. After that it's been my impression that the school cracked down on themes to try to get away from double entendres or titles that would result in unfortunate clothing choices. The themes/dance name must be approved and I've not heard of anything untoward. |
Nope, this is not entirely true. My DD was at NCS within that time frame. Yes, its not the official name but that is how the Christmas dance was known (is they've changed it in the last two years, I wouldn't know). It wasn't just one class officer, its been the tradition for years. And the idea of the pants dance was not so much yoga pants as skin tight pants. Many girls got peggings at American Apparel. And of course they aren't going to seek approval but that doesn't mean the kids don't use these names for the dances. I would be interested if any parents from the past 2 years know if its still going on. Before that, absolutely. |
I don't think there have been dances in December for the last few years, have there? A couple of years ago they also changed the supervisory set-up; there's one faculty member who oversees all the dances (as opposed to being vaguely and there seems to be more oversight as a result. Nevertheless, with all the headaches I am sort of surprised schools even are willing to still host dances. Sad, but I've wondered that. |
STA and NCS issues are terrible-- but no more terrible than at any private. I'm very familiar with an international school (cough cough) who have had numerous incidents reported to their heads of school about terrible off-campus behaviour, their solution? " You parents should get together, join the Parent Organization. Attend our talks by experts for an hour and a half twice a year. Make sure your kids respect their health class teacher. We can't police kids around the clock." "Anyway, most parents don't care". As for the little bits they actually COULD act on, they just choose not to. In fact, there are many adjustments being made to accommodate families who supply funds, even if it means not receiving the vaulted IB Diploma. Better to keep the money rolling in than actually talented students. |
I know 2 Jewish families who left NCS in the past 5 years because their children were bullied. I don't think they were bullied because they were Jewish but I think the parents had no tolerance for the attitude of the administration. |
Will this issue be dead when the NCS girls return to school after break? Will the administration push this aside? |
I know of several as well, perhaps the same ones. The ones I know were definitely not bullied because they were Jewish but there was some kind of cultural issue there that is hard to describe. There is definitely an NCS type. The girls who fit that type aren't necessarily white but it just seems like a disproportionate number of Jewish girls are not the type. I'm Jewish, BTW. Thats why I've been trying to figure this out. |
They were bullied not because of who they were but because of who the bully was. A bully. Plenty of other people were bullied but the Jewish parents did not want to put up with it. The NCS head just blew them off but she does that with everyone. |
The NCS type currently is the type willing to put up with BS in order to say they go to Cathedral. Not many Jewish people in the group. |
Hey, I'm a parent at Sidwell. Speaking from experience, I strongly urge the STA and NCS parents to take this offline. You have no obligation to fight this out in public - even if anonymous - forum. Good luck and I'm sorry this busted out in public, same story could be told at literally any school in the United States or most of the western world.
I am indeed a Sidwell parent. But you can't stop the haters. As to this stuff happens at every school? It does. I do think its dumb to blame girls or boys. They are both participants in this behavior - equally. Check out the social media as proof. Shocker: these kids live in a much, much different culture. Happens every generation, |
Sexual harassment and assault occur at every high school in the country. The problem is not just an issue at NCS/StA. If you have high schoolers at SFS or GDS (or TJ or Wilson or Whitman) you know that similar incidents have happened and there have even been a few expulsions as a result. Saying it wouldn't happen at your school is an act of denial that perpetuates the danger to our daughters. |
