Dylan and Dakota, or Harold and Conrad?

DS's first name is mentioned as being liked by others as a traditional name but his middle name got panned once. What can I say? It was DH's choice! DD's names weren't mentioned at all.

Addison.

It's a disease. Everytime I hear someone call their little girl Addison, I can't help but think "dude, you named your DD after a disease." I realize Addison "discovered" the disease, but still... why not name her lymphoma.

After this post I googled the names plus the word pronunciation, and one of the first entries that popped up was a site with an audio clip of pronunciations. Cool. Aoife almost sounded like Effuck, with a soft ck sound at the end of the name, like a whispered "fuck" at the end. I played it a couple of times to see if I was hearing it correctly.

Oh dear. the k sound at the end is clearly just the sound cutting out. Look at the phonetic pronunciation:

"ee-fah"

I hope you aren't planning a trip to Ireland soon - I am not sure how well your going round the country whispering "fuck" would go down.

Come to think of it, you might do quite well there....

Glad I was disabused of my misinterpretation by other posters. Like I said, I wasn't sure what I was hearing, which is why I replayed it several times and posted the issue here. Obviously, the spelling of these names is not a good indication of pronunciation. (I happen to speak three languages, but Gaelic isn't one of them.)

But your assumptions about me are lovely. Which of us is really the ugly American?

Nope Grayson.

Is Grayson even a real name? No offense, just wondering. I've only heard it as a last name.

Is your Grayson a boy or girl? I just met a baby girl named Grayson.

Well, I guess Grayson is a real name since it is my son's name. I've met a few other boy Grayson and a few girl Greyson/Graysyn.

My friend told me that if you are a "Cohen Jew" you're up there in the hierarchy.

Anonymous wrote:Cohen as a first name is insane to me. Particularly for a non-Jew. It suggests a certain flexibility with reality.

or, a name that doesn't fit the religious heritage at all (ie Jew with totally WASPy name).

Dude, what do you want us to name our kids, Mordechai? And I wouldn't be so quick to id a name as "WASPy." Per Jewish tradition, we named our daughter after her great grandmother - the same name, not a variation. And it's not at all a name that would be known to others as fitting our "religious heritage."

Here's a crazy idea...how about people name their kids names they like that are meaningful to them.

Jebidiah, Jedidiah....really any of the "diah" names make my skin crawl.

I also dislike Gunner very much.....

I'm sure I'll think of some more groaners to post....
