Snowstorm next weekend?

How, in 2025, have people not learned that weather apps are the worst sources for anything other than what’s happening at this exact moment? Do you really think your app knows more than trained weather forecasters?

What BREAK? And why the sad face? Teachers are assigning work as they should do. There is no break on the calendar except for next Thursday and Friday. School has not been deemed a holiday or break for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Nor at this point has it been canceled.

I can't imagine being upset that my high schooler had work assigned while school was probably going to be closed for multiple days. That's how it should be! They just had a two week winter break and will have lots of time on their hands. I wish my elementary schoolers would get some homework! A little structure is good.

When you have a high schooler you will understand. They need breaks because their workload is high.

If your high schooler needs an entire week off with no homework right now, college is going to be tough for them. Now that everyone knows how to use Zoom we just meet virtually and don’t miss a beat when it snows unless it’s a lab course. And even then, a lot of of us have virtual lab activities figured out because of the pandemic. Maybe teach your kid to toughen up instead of hoping they get breaks all the time.

Oh shut up. It’s the end of the quarter and many kids have a lot to do as the teachers frantically assign stuff to get their last required formatives and summatives in. In college you don’t sit around in classes all day long - there’s a lot more free time during the day to complete work.

The break is Thursday and Friday and is between quarters. Now they may get Monday-Wednesday too but some teachers are assigning work pre emptively which sucks.

I always found this argument odd too. The workload in public school is a lot different than in college. Many college kids go to school full time and work. It’s really not the same time management wise.

The end of the quarter is very stressful for high school and middle school students. They have all of their classes with exams, final projects etc.

At least in fcps there are no requirements to be in zoom classes on snow days. Hopefully these kids can get some extra time to do their assignments and some time to relax too!

What do you think the midterm period and the end of a college semester looks like? All the exams, papers, and projects are due then.

You think it’s easier for students to manage work and school? Many are working long hours due to high costs. And the job market sucks so these kids are really feeling the pressure to do additional experiences during undergrad years that make them stand out and build connections.

Don set your kind for the idea that college is somehow going to be less stressful. They should be building their time management and resilience now so they don’t crumble when they are out of the house with less of a support system.

Start a different thread if you want to discuss that. This one is for the snowstorm!

Someone else introduced the topic by whining that their kid’s HS teacher dared to assign some extra work to keep their class on track, like that’s such a terrible thing. Their poor child will never recover.

Anyway, an event that was supposed to take place at a school on Tuesday evening was already postponed, so I assume they are expecting to be closed Monday and Tuesday for sure.

That’s not what they said. They were just disappointed. Regardless, why does it bother you so much? Relax. Go make some hot cocoa!

Ok, well my kid is in his second year of college and has a job. Lives at home to save money, but we all make our own choices about things like that. Grades are a/b and time management is still developing. So far, college and work schedule is preferable to my kid, but not everyone will have the same experience.

Anyway, back to snow day discussion! When does anyone think they will announce the status for Monday? I predict Sunday around 6pm.

My vote is 3pm.

No later than noon.

They’ve never announced it that early. I’m thinking it may be announced as early as 3-4 pm but most likely by 6 pm Sunday.

I live in Richmond. Everything is already closed Monday…even doctor’s offices.

FCPS should just announce it now!

FPCS almost always follows OPM. I wouldn't be surprised if they announce tonight that they will be closed Monday since OPM is already announced the government is closed for Monday.

No it doesn’t. I’ve been working for FCPS for over 20 years. They’re two completely different beasts. OPM often announces late and takes into account multiple areas including Maryland. Besides, transporting 180K students required a different threshold for safety than adults with access to public transportation.

Nope. That’s why I said, “Not that I believe it”.

Back in 2016 when we got 3 ft, they announced the cancellation for the next day in the early afternoon.

+100, they may have gone with OPM decades ago, but not within the past 10 years.

Yes, and if it’s bad enough for the government to close, there is no chance FCPS will open.
