What do the non mask wearers think today when they see someone wearing a mask

I continue to wear one because I'm not convinced that getting covid multiple times mean just a week long cold/flu with zero long term consequences. May just be that I know someone who had super mild covid - as in a runny nose for a few days - and then had a cardiac event 2 weeks later; and another who not all of a sudden has high blood sugar. If those things don't matter to you, that's fine with me.

I’m one who had a cardiac event when I had covid so I’m not going to spend a second wondering what anyone thinks of my mask.

Yet, in the face of this, some people, including on this thread, are still wearing masks and insist it’s “not over”. Either it is over, or it’s not over and it wasn’t ever that severe, or it’s not over but masks don’t make a difference. All 3 of those can’t be false at the same time given how few people are masking and the low severity of the illness.

I may be wrong but the people I know IRL who mask religiously are more worried now about long term issues. Not judging whether they’re right or wrong but often people will reference that right after covid their otherwise healthy BIL who ran marathons had a cardiac event or got diabetes or whatever.

Seems like some people are concerned about the long game and they have that “luxury” - in the sense that they don’t have to worry about ruining a child’s senior year by insisting on masks or not allowing them to go to events or whatever bc they don’t have school age kids.

This is all correct.

No one is still suggesting events be canceled or everyone mask in schools. Relax. People who are still masking are simply trying to protect themselves or their family. It doesn’t require anything of you so you can stop being bitter about it.

I don’t judge them. It looks a little out of place but I assume they have their reasons and don’t care even if the don’t.

I wouldn't say people are bitter. Puzzled, yes. Wearing masks is one of the most visible things to do that does send out strong signals, whether you like it or not, which is why people talk about it. I'm not the only person on here who's spent time in other cities or countries where there's virtually no masking left, yet all the reasons given on here in the DMV would also apply to these places, but somehow the population and culture think differently. Either the DMV has a higher level of anxiety, or more unhealthy people, or both!

I can tell from the reasons put forward for still masking that many maskers are suffering from a form of anxiety, whether they're on the spectrum or not. Protecting themselves and their families? That's anxiety. Of course, I never approach anyone in a mask or ask them why they're masking, but it doesn't prevent me from occasionally wondering....

Some of us nearly died when we had Covid. Some of us live with people who have emphysema. If you think that’s “anxiety” and not “a reasonable safety measure”, then I think we’re getting closer to understanding why masking in the DMV might be more common: the people are smarter.

99% mental, 1% chance it is a physical illness

It’s not anxiety to protect yourself from getting sick. It is anxiety to fear others who mask. Check your anxiety. My masking protects me. You have no idea about someone else’s life. You are selfish. No one owes you an explanation.

Doesn't mean mentally "sick", it may well be a very rational and reasonable decision by someone based on their risk level or that of people they are close to. I don't assume they are sick mentally OR physically.

If protecting yourself and your family = anxiety, I sincerely hope you've cut the seat belts out of your car, unhooked all smoke detectors, and never take up an appt for a pap smear, mammogram, or any kind of well check up. Well - do you do any of these things? If so, why? Why are you soooo anxious?

Will some of you calm down? You’re going to give yourself that cardiac event you fear. Asked and answered. It’s perfectly fine that you don’t like some of the responses here, but OP asked for our impressions and thoughts, and here they are. You don’t have to like my inner thoughts about you wearing a mask, just like I don’t have to like or accept your reasons for choosing to wear one. Move on with your day. Really.

But DCUM loves to police thought because we are wrong, apparently.

I mean, it’s a discussion forum. No one is wound up. We’re discussing as intended. Interpreting normal discussion as anger is a sign of anxiety though….

I take precautions like seatbelts etc. yes. But I don’t wear a helmet when I walk down the street. I think masks are like that. People who wear masks use the same rationale as someone who might choose to wear a bike helmet when they walk around. There is risk assessment and then there’s paranoia ….

I mean: you’re mistaken. As mistaken as people in the 1960s who thought it was overkill to quit smoking in order to avoid lung cancer.
