NYC mayor declares 'emergency' due to migrants

Anonymous
The mayor should be encouraging New Yorkers to house at least one immigrant in every home with 500 extra square feet over 2000 square feet with less than 4 occupants. C’mon New York! You can do this!

IRCA of 86’ promised to curb illegal immigration. It failed to do so because Reagan signed a bill that removed any sanctions against employers that hire illegals.

Do you use the "n" word, PP?
This word is so offensive that it equals the "n" word.
Human beings are not "illegal."
Human beings do commit illegal acts, including crossing the border to our country without documentation, which is, of course, illegal.
Please grow up and use adult language, PP.

Is this satire? Calling illegal aliens "illegals" is nothing like the n word and it's offensive to claim it is.

The use of the word "illegals" offends me as much as the use of the "n" word does.
Perhaps you're less sensitive.

It offends me when libs think all Hispanics abroad, illegal immigrants, Hispanic Americans, are one and the same. I find it offensive when someone brings forth a Spanish speaker because they think I need a translator when I'm a dc native and my family has been dc natives since the 1970s.

Encourage? No. Go through voter rolls and determine who voted Democrat. Set some criteria like above and force them to house under some sort of penalty.

We have a secret ballot in this country. Good luck with that plan.

Agree. We need these people. There is space in many SFHs for at least one perhaps two or three more people. In a time of climate emergency we need to use what we have to maximize efficiency. Millions more will be coming each year and it’s the responsibility of Americans to take them in when they have unused space.

NJ Governor Murphy, who campaigned on making NJ a sanctuary state, says no way to Biden administration proposal to relocate 60,000 migrants from NYC to Atlantic City International Airport.

Love this idea! People should take responsibility for their words.

It is the responsibility of Americans who voted for this. Don't hold those who voted for Trump responsible for this.

Maybe he should team up with the governors of southern border states and find a solution for their common issue. He can’t have things both ways.

Doesn't Texas get federal money to deal with immigrants? If so, and since they are shipping them to New York, should't New York get that money now?

Would be interested in how much they get. My quick Google search found only this--short on specifics to individual states:

https://www.dhs.gov/news/2023/06/12/department-homeland-security-announces-distribution-more-290-million-congressional

Found another reference that Texas had upped its funding for border security to $3 billion for fiscal year 2022 to 2023.

Maybe a proportion. Of course, border states deal with the bulk of new arrivals and should get a cut of the money for that. If a place declares itself a sanctuary, that means they won’t cooperate with authorities and should therefore get no federal money to deal with migrants lacking the proper paper work.

There is never enough federal money for border states. When migrants get injured or sick they go to local hospitals and those hospitals aren’t reimbursed. When migrants enroll their kids into school the state and local communities pay. There is no way the sales tax or unaccounted for social security tax is making up for medical and school bills.

Every migrant child Texas ships to NYC saves the state $ 10,000 a year (what it Texas pays to educate one student) and costs NYC over $20,000 (what NYC pays to educate a child). So Texas economically benefits from busing all the migrant children out of Texas.

Texas is causing the cost of dealing with them to double. NYC should sue them for the difference.
