Columbia won't be top 30 next year.

Columbia won't be top 50 next year.

When the ranking doesn't use any survey data such as:

https://cwur.org/2021-22.php

Columbia is easily top 10 in the world.

UVA grad? This list is accurate especially since it has LACs included.

UVA will fall out of top 30.

its currently 25 and no 4 of all publics. I don’t think it will drop at all. In fact, it’s perceived value will continue to climb as SLACs and privates price themselves upwards of 100k a year.

Why do so many people seem to genuinely believe there can be one definitive list that's right for everyone?

The notion of one list that captures and universal ranking criteria and reflects THE RANKING is outdated and nonsense. This obsession with the numbers and rankings also contributes to the mania around college admissions.

Consider that there are no "magic 20" schools. What is the difference between #23 and #19? Is there any? What if #6 games the rankings? What if #9 is just "top" because it looks good on the tee shirt, but it's coasting on a long-diminished reputation?

What if a school is #30 but is rising in the rankings because it is well run, has dynamic leadership and attracts top notch professors?

Bonus points: what does your kid actually want? A school that has everything your kid wants but is an arbitrary #35 on some list is likely far better than a #15 that they'll hate.

Let's face it, these rankings are more college-industrial-complex BS, designed to amp up ambitious, competitive parents by designing a scarcity-model mind-f*&k. Step back from it and look at these schools more objectively and you'll empower your kid to chart their own path.

Under that you start getting “spiky” school….

Nd…Catholics
Vandy…sundresses
Emory, rice…south
CMU (I like CMU a lot)….tech, poor QoL, Pittsburgh meh
Gtown….shitty endowment, shitty facilities, kids don’t like it, great public/social science sector programs

The rough t15 are schools that are just straight up strong and have resources and provenance

MIT isn't spiky? How about JHU?

There's a difference between top 5 and top 10. There's a difference between top 10 and top 15. There's a difference between top 15 and top 20.

Which ranking are you talking about?

Maybe, but it's not a difference in the quality of education.

MIT social sciences are a monster. Only a philistine would think MIT isn’t an all round beast

JHU isn’t either - humanities are really strong at JHU. Jhu is like Chicago

Jhu is held back by location and absolutely shitty administration and QoL

No there is not, bird for brain. Even if you read USnews the difference between 15-20 is 3 points. The difference between Harvard and Emory is only 15 points. These schools are ELITE!

That is exactly the point because it doesn't seem like you know much about Vandy or Emory to call them spiky when both are more well-rounded schools than JHU. Both schools are great pre-med, pre-business, and pre-law. You would never send you child to JHU for either if you had other options.
