| I was at a playdate with a new friend today and was surprised to see her breast feed (as in literally by the breast, not just breast milk in a bottle) her 3 year old. It got me wondering- what is the oldest age you have seen someone breast feed their child? Is there a world record of the longest time someone has breastfed their child? And if so, how old was such child when they last were breastfed?? |
| I'm sure someone will post the video of the extended breastfeeding lady from the U.K. who was still breastfeeding her 7 and 9 year old. One of my sister's children was extremely attached to breastfeeding and didn't self-wean until 3.5 years of age. I think it's not entirely uncommon in other parts of the world for people to breastfeed their children for longer. I know my grandmother and a few of my aunts, for example, nursed their children until at least 2 if not longer. |
| I know plenty of people who bf past the 3rd birthday but o can't imagine why anyone would pump & bottle-feed a 3yo. |
I actually find it much weirder to see my friends who bottle feed 3 year olds. Don't know why. Wonder what that world record is-- we know folks who still bottle feed their five year old. |

my cousin was BF until he was 5.
it's common back home and i don't find it weird at all. MIL used to have BM until a few years ago but she didn't know so I don't think that counts. |
| I've never seen anyone breastfeeding a child older than around 2 or 2.5. I breastfed both of mine until they self-weaned at 2. |
| I have a few friends who BFed until the child was over 4. Not my thing, but also none of my business. I think *public* BFing of an older child is often more about the parent than the child. |
+1 I BF my first child until he was 2.5 and the second self-weaned at 3.5. I generally didn't BF publicly after e.g. about 12-14 mos with either of them, but if I had, yes, I would have BF "as in literally by the breast." Literally.

Feeding a 3 year old, like a baby, from a breast or bottle is pretty odd in American culture, though you'll find die-hard defenders on DCUM, most the rest of us roll our eyes behind their backs.
To OP's question, I've read about women in other countries going as far as breast feeding 16 year olds. I know you'll find it hard to believe, so here is a link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/jan/09/breastfeeding-older-children |
The US isn't a third world country though I am sure many feminazi breastfeeders would do so.until their children go through Add "puberty" to dictionary |
| I knew someone that bf their husband |
| I have seen quite a few breastfed until 3/3.5, but I'm in the bay area, YMMV. I breastfed until 2.5 for #1, 22mos for #2 - seems pretty common around here. Though I don't really see kids nursed in public much after 1/1.5. Mine nursed 1-2x/day after 18mos or so. |
| I am still breastfeeding my 3.5 yo. He asks for it only at bedtime, naptime, sometimes in the middle of the night/nap or at waking times. He also does not linger more than like 10 seconds. but it seems important to him. |

Apparently my cousin did until her son was about 4. Wasn't there to see it.
A friend had a son with significant physical health problems. He was small for his age. He was BF until he was 4, also. |
