Wasn't the OP's questions how old was the oldest child you've seen breastfed? I think PP was just answering the question.
Why are you so defensive?

it's common back home and i don't find it weird at all.

MIL used to have BM until a few years ago but she didn't know so I don't think that counts.

Forgive me if it sounds ignorant, but how can someone produce enough milk to satisfy a 5-yr old? I suppose at that age it's comfort feeding and they don't get much nutrition out of it?

I was 41

I try not to judge other people's parenting decisions as long as they aren't harmful. But I kind of think breastfeeding older children IS harmful. I breastfed all five of mine exclusively. Like most kids, somewhere between about 12 and 14 months they started becoming more independent. They were drinking from a cup and eating pretty much everything we did. Had I continued to nurse them it would have been 100% of about MY needs and not about theirs. They were getting most of their nutrition from the foods they were eating. Milk was no longer even necessary.

Seeing a three (or even an older two) year old with a bottle grosses me out. To me it isn't about the breast as much as it is this need to treat a toddler like an infant.

No, the OP asked if there was a world record. PP mentioned some 5-year-old in a LLL meeting, which is not even close to a world record, obviously. It was a very WTF comment, considering it doesn't at all answer OP's question re: world records.

So, you're a weird puritanic nut and you "kind of think" the WHO and AAP are "gross" for recommending breastfeeding until 2. What outstanding insight!

Actually OP asked "what is the oldest age you have seen someone breast feed their child?"

It got me wondering- what is the oldest age you have seen someone breast feed their child? Is there a world record of the longest time someone has breastfed their child? And if so, how old was such child when they last were breastfed??

I actually find it much weirder to see my friends who bottle feed 3 year olds. Don't know why. Wonder what that world record is-- we know folks who still bottle feed their five year old.

+1

I BF my first child until he was 2.5 and the second self-weaned at 3.5. I generally didn't BF publicly after e.g. about 12-14 mos with either of them, but if I had, yes, I would have BF "as in literally by the breast." Literally.

Feeding a 3 year old, like a baby, from a breast or bottle is pretty odd in American culture, though you'll find die-hard defenders on DCUM, most the rest of us roll our eyes behind their backs.

To OP's question, I've read about women in other countries going as far as breast feeding 16 year olds. I know you'll find it hard to believe, so here is a link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2010/jan/09/breastfeeding-older-children

No, I don't think that's correct. Most people don't care. I don't care. My first was breastfed for only 12 weeks, and most of that time she was getting half formula. Second is mostly breastfed but we'll most likely be done by six months. If someone wants to breastfeed her kid til he's, I don't roll my eyes.

I breastfed my son for 5years and he has never been sick and he's almost 7 now. It was a wonderful bonding experience and I never pumped.

I have to believe some of you are trolling or I am going to lose faith in humanity.

This was me, except I cut him of at about 30 seconds (nursing a baby and it just felt too weird). I finally said we are done at 3 1/2. I was ready to stop at 2 1/2 but it seemed important to him. My daughter (now 14 months) will likely stop earlier - she just isn't as into breastfeeding as he was. I think I stopped breastfeeding in public sometime around age 3 or maybe 21/2. But if you came to my house, you just might see it :0
