What do you think about this house in Mclean?

We saw the house over the weekend and are considering buying it. Do you think it is priced well? for those familiar with the neighborhood, how do you like it?

I have a feeling it's one of those houses that you have to see in person, because the pictures likely don't do it justice. Seems a little high.

Great neighborhood and schools.

I think it's priced a little high - not too much. I'd be thinking more like $935K.

I'm pretty sure that's a Kettler Brothers home - they built a number of subdivisions in Fairfax and MoCo in the 60s. The homes are well-built and have held up quite well. This home obviously has been renovated, although not with top-of-the-line stuff. You could probably buy the same house in the Falls Church part of Fairfax County (Falls Hill, Barcroft Woods) for roughly $750-800K, although you'd be in the Marshall or Stuart HS districts instead of the McLean HS district. Here's an example of a newer, somewhat larger Kettler Brothers house over in Falls Church (Stuart district) that was listed at $899K and recently went under contract:

I think it's a very good location - near Arlington, the GW Parkway and the Marie Butler Levin protected area, but not far from Tysons, either. Definitely suburban, but not isolated.

Good luck.

Here's the only house in Falls Hill on the market right now: http://franklymls.com/FX7929311

Like the house, and agree Marshall is a good school, but I wouldn't want to be quite this close to Route 66.

seems overpriced, small closets, blah interior and exterior. And no garage. If it was easy walking distance to the metro or a downtown area or something cool, then maybe tht could makeup up for the curb appeal.

Price difference is because of schools. I like the Mclean house.

Well maybe more because of the mclean name. The schools are pretty much on par.

I think the house has decent "curb appeal." I would prefer to have a garage. They were standard in some of the later Kettler Brothers SFH developments like Barcroft Woods.

Mclean is a good location but the house is...

I wouldn't pay that much for a house like that - the yard sucks - there is no yard and it's lop-sided. If prices are too high around there to have any decent yard, I'd move to Falls Church city or Vienna. Having nice outdoor space is important to me.

Plus, McLean High is not the end all be all of schools in NoVA anyway - it's not like moving there you guarantee admission into the TJ program or anything.

I don't like the lay-out or size of the kitchen, it seems awkward and that would be difficult for me because I live in my kitchen.

The fixtures, hardware and tile work is not to my taste. While that is only aesthetic, I would have to change ALL of it (except for the bathroom with the white subway tile).

I actually love houses of this style, though I would paint the brick white, but the whole thing looks like a Home Depot Special, including the landscaping.

Me too. I like the Mclean house as well. What I don't like however is the price for what you're getting. The upgrades looks like they were thrown together. The layout is good, the location is great. I would offer 890k and use the cost difference to remodel, ie: more elegant tiles in the basement, reconfigure the kitchen, get rid of the kitchenette from the basement and put some nice artwork on that big wall. Create different sitting area for your pleasure - their remodel is just wrong, but the space is open so you can work with it. Without a garage, 890k feels right to me. One thing to consider, future resale will be affected by the no garage issue, Mclean or not. I think I like the second Falls Church house.
