VA Public Schools other than FCPS
Give what up? The proposal is still out there last I heard. Do you have updated info? Why do you think they aren't going to close Nottingham? |
Proposal is still out there and nothing has really changed - as of now, they still want to close Nottingham to convert to swing space. But they really screwed the teachers - APS staff had a meeting a few weeks ago with teachers and staff at NES and it basically went as bad and poorly as any meeting between an employer and employees as it could. If they vote to turn NES into swing space, I bet the school loses 1/3 to 1/2 of teachers for next year. |
So? |
Are you really that dense? It means the current students are going to get screwed between now and 2026 when the school would close to become swing. Teachers would be crazy not to leave and find a permanent spot to continue their career. Any decent teacher will be gone, or try to be. Permanent subs galore. |
+1. That is, if HR can get away from their paid PTO long enough to actually hire the permanent subs. It will be awesome having kindergartners learn reading from people with zero experience. |
and the principal probably doesn't have what it takes to put the experienced teachers in K and 1st. This does suck for the teachers but it's good for other APS principals who need staff. |
APS Mission statement: "To ensure all students learn and thrive in safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments" except those at Nottingham between now and 2026 but at least it'll be good for the rest of the principals and schools. |
I wonder if APS will block transfers. Then it’ll be great for FFX. |
So Nottingham is down MORE from their low numbers last year. Wow. More people leaving for private?! So Much for the argument that kids are coming back! |
Kindergarten is up. It's not that more people are leaving for private, it's that the people that left aren't coming back. Can you blame them with APS dysfunction? And why if you were already all set up in private because of the pandemic years would you return to a school slated for possible closure? |
Yes, this. Anecdotal, but I don’t know anyone who left APS for private and returned to APS before middle school. And when families have multiple kids, if older ones left, their younger ones are far less likely to then start out in public. It’s a chain reaction. |
I'd leave too if I could given that they announced a plan to close the school and you know all the teachers are eyeing the door. This is a direct response to the plan to close it. |
| Yeah. I don’t think Nottinghams enrollment is going to rise enough to keep it open. |
|
According to the APS 9/30/2023 enrollment numbers report, Nottingham's K class is 56, 1st grade 52, 2nd is 70, 3rd is 60, 4th is 77, and 5th is 58, for a whopping total of 364 kids. It's the school with the lowest enrollment of all Arlington elementaries, although I don't believe it's capacity is actually the lowest in Arlington.
Those numbers are LOW. K may be at 3 teachers but they only have 56 kids -- that's 2 classes of 19 and 1 class of 18. Must be nice to have such tiny class sizes!!! |
jeez we can't win with you people. Nott's K class sizes were too large last year, they were over the APS limit. That is why there were "only" 2 - they got 2 but putting too many kids in them. You don't look at raw numbers, you look at capacity. Nottingham has lower capacity than most other elem schools. So it's #s are always going to be less. |
