APS Closing Nottingham

What is YOUR problem? Just like to fight?

Either APS will redraw district lines so that other schools aren't carrying so much weight compared to Nottingham or ... Nottingham could be on the chopping block again down the line to close for real, not just on a temporary basis. 50 kids per grade for half the school is a bit nutso, so you either balance that or find some other solution. Moreover, if Nottingham parents down own and learn from their past selfishness and mistakes in dealing with redistricting and other issues that put them at odds with parents from neighboring schools -- and stop trying to foist the bad thing off on a neighboring school and otherwise completely alienate non-Nottingham parents -- they will continue to find themselves completely alone when APS looks to make changes they don't want at Nottingham.

Take it as a lesson and learn from it, Nottingham, or we'll be back here again in a little while. Remember when APS wanted to make you a choice school, and you pointed a finger elsewhere? That bad thing went away but then this new bad, worse thing replaced it, with you potentially disappearing and becoming a swing space. You've escaped that too, but this is APS, so expect the next bad thing to be worse. Be warned and do better!

When in this process was there foisting anything on neighboring schools or alienating non-Nottingham parents? This didn’t happen.

It’s okay. People involved even tangentially know this. Scolds with an axe to grind are going to continue to turn out the same old “Nottingham is MEAN” BS. Once upon a time, the Nottingham community did not behave well – it was the rezoning for Discovery. It was not a good look. But since then, it hasn’t happened again. Sure, randos spitballing anonymously on DCUM have made crappy suggestions, but the organized parents/PTA working on the last 2 rounds where Nottingham was targeted have absolutely not done that and have been very careful not to do that.

Are you serious? Within the first 50 pages or so Nottingham parents suggested APS should (1) use Taylor as a swing space instead because it was more run down; (2) close ATS instead and redistribute the kids back; and (3) pick some school south of Route 50 for a swing space instead because people in 22207 paid more money for their homes and so should be able to rely on having a walkable neighborhood elementary school nearby. Just read the thread.

The Discovery redistricting wasn't the only time Nottingham parents behaved badly. There was also the time that Nottingham was proposed to convert to an option school, and Nottingham fingerpointed their way out of it. People involved even tangentially know this.

Randos on an anonymous message board on the internet do not match the words or actions of the people actually advocating on behalf of Nottingham in the real world, where real people talk to other real people.

And yet, real people from Nottingham and other schools still gather on DCUM to hash out their ideas and talk to one another, and form opinions of one another based on those discussions.

Anyone can be anyone or say anything on the internet. Doesn’t make it true. Lots of people make statements just get a rise out of others or take a contrarian opinion in an effort to troll.

I could make one post as a NES supporter and then another as a boogeyman and you’d never know.

Good lord, this again. This is like getting mad at the players in Hunger Games. If you don't like it then blame the Game Master APS for setting up boundary wars that pit one school community against another.

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

and even if these were actual Nottingham parents, so what? This is public school people, they take everyone. So every school community is going to have its crazies. I mean who can forget McCrazy at McKinley a few years back? Was she loud and irrational? Yes. Was she notoriously awful? Yes. Do I think badly of her entire school because of her? Of course not.

People. PEOPLE! It is totally unfair to hold bad opinions of Nottingham parents based on their past actions when really you should be blaming the following instead:

* APS;
* People POSING as Nottingham parents on DCUM in their free time who are not really Nottingham parents;
* Individual Nottingham parents throwing other communities under the bus on DCUM who do not speak for the entire Nottingham school community.

So: Do not learn from the past. Do not extrapolate! For heaven's sake do not count up the incidents where Nottingham lodged other communities underneath buses. Please just sit quietly with your hands folded and allow Nottingham -- which btw spends more on its houses than you do probably as they have told us earlier in the thread and has a whole 364 children enrolled in APS -- to simply move on and learn nothing from this experience. Sounds right.

You should’ve stopped after your first paragraph, because that was the correct opinion.

What exactly should Nottingham learn from this experience? That APS has zero clue what they are doing? That advocacy done correctly based on facts and figures can make a difference? That there are people here that simply hate Nottingham because they are bored and have nothing else to do?

Everyone in the county has clean hands except for the Nottingham community. Yep, how’s the weather up there on that high horse?
