Fascinating. APS plans to repurpose Nottingham for some unnamed elementary school that needs immediate renovations. Nottingham kids will go to Discovery and Tuckahoe. Anyone know what school needs “immediate” renovations. Sounds ominous. The fact that they are not saying is odd. |
County projecting in 5 years we will have a surplus of over 1,000 elementary seats. That sounds...optimistic. |
Based on what I wonder. There has been a lot of turnover and lots of new kids in the neighborhood. Pandemic dip was a blip driven by desperate parents who could afford alternatives. We’re coming back. |
I like the idea of having a school they can move kids into to renovate another. Many of the schools are in desperate need of renovations which are impossible to complete when kids are in the building. |
Montessori? They kind of need them offsite to build there. |
Agree |
Heard they are going to do a bigger renovation of Williamsburg.
Years ago they wanted to move Key Spanish Immersion to Nottingham but parents found out and stopped it. |
So rare that APS does an actual full school renovation. Abingdon a rare exception. They just put on additions like an ugly tumor house - looking at you Taylor and Swanson. FCPS is less innovative when it comes to design but at least they fully renovate buildings every 20-25 years. |
OMG- how much more are they going to pay me as a teacher 1 to move all my stuff to the holding school and back and 2 to pay for the EZPASS on 66 and 495 that just added to my commute? I know none of this really matters to anyone be me and my family, I’m aware my needs are small. Just know that whenever the school move happens, it sounds like a great year to transfer to FCPS!!!! |
Sounds like FCPS might be a better fit? |
Sounds like a good plan. My kids are zoned for Nottingham but it makes sense to me. Nearby school are easy enough to get to and walkable for many, including the two busloads of kids who currently get bussed to Nottingham despite being in the walking zone for other schools. |
m Are your kids not there yet? It’s very disruptive to have to leave friends and go to a new school in 5th grade which is what would happen to the current 1st graders. |
I like the idea, but what a cluster it will be to bus an entire school to Nottingham when that school needs a reno. And based on the list in the pdf, it looks like Randolph and Barcroft are the oldest with their last renos in the early 90s. That's a schlep for them. |
I'm at Nottingham and I guess we'd be fine going to Tuckahoe, which is also really close. I'm trying to view this impartially - but I just don't get how Nottingham makes sense location-wise for a "swing." It's in the middle of a neighborhood that's already had traffic problems causing new recent 4-way stops (due to multiple fatalities), has limited street parking, and is hectic with the buses plus drop-off/pickup line that exists - and even now, SO many families are walkers. I can't imagine how that pivots to a 100% bus/car drop-off crowd.
