APS Closing Nottingham

It's the school with the lowest enrollment of all Arlington elementaries, although I don't believe it's capacity is actually the lowest in Arlington.

Those numbers are LOW. K may be at 3 teachers but they only have 56 kids -- that's 2 classes of 19 and 1 class of 18. Must be nice to have such tiny class sizes!!!

jeez we can't win with you people. Nott's K class sizes were too large last year, they were over the APS limit. That is why there were "only" 2 - they got 2 but putting too many kids in them.

You don't look at raw numbers, you look at capacity. Nottingham has lower capacity than most other elem schools. So it's #s are always going to be less.

Eh? According to the APS class size report, for last year, Nottingham had two kindergarden classes, one with 24 kids and the other with 25 kids, where APS's recommended maximum for K is 24 kids. Not exactly busting at the seams there last year, even with just 2 classes. Just a few more kids in K this year and you split them between three whole classes and you've got some of the lowest K class sizes in the county, congrats. https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Class-Size-Report-2022-23_FINAL-2.pdf

Yeah. But it needs to come closer than that to filling the space. They aren’t even close to capacity. That’s just silly. They need to close it or do a major boundary shift.

You don’t close schools because they are under enrolled. That’s not what the CIP is about - it’s about whether there needs to be a swing space and if Nottingham is the right spot for swing space.

If it isn’t, sure do a boundary shift. They aren’t closing the school just for the sake of closing it.

Um, actually, schools do get closed for under-enrollment. That's precisely how we ended up with some of the County community centers.

Well they shouldn’t have (and it’s more complicated than that). We’d be much better off across the county if they were still schools.

You are talking about like 40 years ago. That’s when a bunch were closed and turned into community centers. You think they should’ve kept schools open for 40 years?

At a time when the school board was appointed by the county board so there really wasn't a choice or chance for an independent perspective. They definitely should have kept a couple or made it easier to return a couple -- didn't happen

They definitely should have had provisions to be able to easily turn them back into schools in the future. Their lack of vision has caused harm years later when we are so constrained with where schools can go.

Canceled! Nottingham will NOT be used as swing space. What a waste of everyone’s time. And needlessly worried families and staff. At least APS realized the error of their plan.

It’s “canceled” for this CIP. It could very likely be on the table for future CIPs.

APS also needs to look at enrollment of Nottingham…

Yup. This kind of idea is rarely dead, just set aside for a bit. The only things stopping it long term are real enrollment growth/shifts that require the school to remain open.

Sorry haters and losers. It was clear at last night’s meeting that swing space is not and will not be needed for any of the projects that APS wants to prioritize. And a bunch are middle schools where even if a swing space is needed, it can’t be an elementary school.

Where are you getting this from? Can’t find the meeting everyone is referring to…

There was a public but not televised “committee of the whole” meeting last night where they presented the facilities report detailing the schools that require renovations.
