I can't speak for them but I don't see why a letter of support would be interpreted as anything but kind and thoughtful.

As far as the bigger picture of how to support, I would think a renewed emphasis on crime prevention, both security as well as addressing underlying causes such as drug and alcohol abuse, unemployment, felony convictions, education, etc.

As far as a safe word: I think every family should have a plan of action, including safety words, if this unthinkable act were to happen to them.

You can find his facebook page by searching for Dillion Wint (i searched him under that name after someone posted the link to a tweet by him)
It shows the same pictures of him as in media (washington post).

In which case, he's from Georgetown, Guyana, not Jamaica. And he lists himself as living in New York. (but studied at Prince Georges community college)

The race of the victims and the perps does not influence my disgust, but it reinforces my trepidation around young AA men in my DC neighborhood. I hate feeling this way. It sucks.

I'm rarely NOT terrified around black men. They commit a large percentage of crime in this country, especially considering the percentage of the population that is black. It is just common sense to be scared.

I live in a black neighborhood so based on your thinking I should be afraid of every man walking on the street. And this is what you learn as a white person in a black neighborhood -- people are people. The vast majority are not out to hurt you and you need to stop judging people based on their race. Say hello, even!

(having said that, let's not kid ourselves -- on average, a black person in a white neighborhood is much safer than a white person in a black one)

Not a lot of people are "scared". This is not a random thing. Unless you have large amounts of cash dropped at your house and other places, you are going to be fine. Usually people who deal in cash have bodyguards and security so they don't get robbed. Someone took notice of the cash moving around and saw easy money. In the construction industry cash discounts are common, as are other practices that require cash. In Greece it is standard practices to avoid taxes by paying cash.

It's obvious that the "large amount of cash left outside" was for paying off the thug. No one has confirmed that having "large amount of cash" is normal for this family and it sounds like Savvas really had to work the phone to even get that amount in cash.

It sounds pretty random. Stupid, vile pretty criminal breaks into house thinking people have a lot of money, things get out of hand (understatement) and tragedy occurs.

This is true. Animals in the wild always are on alert and have a survival instinct. Humans too often rationalize everything to the point they just feel they are safe and immune and that they are on this planet for pleasure. I don't mean the victims in anyway brought this on themselves. There are bad people everywhere ready to take advantage of good people. Bad people lie, cheat, rob, rape, murder. I am not white nor am I in the same social class as many dcum posters and this crime is truly horrific to me.
