And, for whatever it's worth, I am a white, middle-aged woman with kids who went to the same schools as the Savopoulos children.

I am black. And I am sickened by ANY senseless act of violence. But the race of the victims and perps does not influence my disgust.

Is this a new "black guilt" thing?

The race of the victims and the perps does not influence my disgust, but it reinforces my trepidation around young AA men in my DC neighborhood. I hate feeling this way. It sucks.

I'm rarely NOT terrified around black men. They commit a large percentage of crime in this country, especially considering the percentage of the population that is black. It is just common sense to be scared.

+1. And I'm white so of course I feel guilty for feeling this way, but I can't help it.

The criminals in the Pettit murders were two white men. Would you have willingly opened the door to those guys?

Have at it. Personal safety comes first. But, I hope you're also cautious around white males. After all, whites are the PRIMARY perpetrators when the victim is white.

You don't get. The probability that a young black male with dreadlocks is up to no good must be at least 50 times higher than a white male, EVEN WHEN we are talking about a white victim only. So, from the perspective of a white person, it is perfectly rational to be much more cautious around a young black male with dreadlocks than around any white male.

I think an unsavory character is an unsavory character, white or black.

9:11 and 9:13 - you are fueling this fire. Some of us are trying to acknowledge societal attitudes (even when they are wrong) and hope that this terrible tragedy doesn't exacerbate those feelings.

I was wondering the same. Even as low life as this thug was, you just don't expect murdering 4 people and torturing a child!! It's just beyond evil and I can't wrap my mind around someone doing this for money.

I live in a black neighborhood so based on your thinking I should be afraid of every man walking on the street. And this is what you learn as a white person in a black neighborhood -- people are people. The vast majority are not out to hurt you and you need to stop judging people based on their race. Say hello, even!

Now they need to find him and his accomplice(s). I hope the police really checked hard into the younger brother. And any connection with the young woman set on fire in MD.

And it looks random. So we can all be scared. Like the Pettits and Goffs and the Harveys in Richmond. Just awful and random.

Incidentally, look at the Fox News comments. They are soooo terribly racist. It makes the situation even worse, if that is possible.

I hope they find them soon.

Not a lot of people are "scared". This is not a random thing. Unless you have large amounts of cash dropped at your house and other places, you are going to be fine. Usually people who deal in cash have bodyguards and security so they don't get robbed. Someone took notice of the cash moving around and saw easy money. In the construction industry cash discounts are common, as are other practices that require cash. In Greece it is standard practices to avoid taxes by paying cash.

I am a woman and a runner - my group has had several speakers talk to us about the dangers of running alone and what we should do if confronted - the common theme is "surprise your attacker by aggressively defending yourself - scream, kick, punch, go for vulnerable physical places". But this assumes you are alone, not in your home where your child is potentially being used as a pawn.
I also think most of us aren't like our attackers - we think that we can talk through the situation and bring some "reason" to a truly unreasonable, sociopath.

I agree. Another possibility was that the wife, housekeeper and child were already bound when father got home. So first thing he saw could have been one or more criminals with knives to his child's throat, and from then on it was impossible to react in any way.

I know. I'm going to put an end to that shortly. I'm going to leave a few of the racist posts as evidence of the attitudes that exist in our community, but we are not going to turn in to Fairfax Underground.

Question: Has any link been made between this thug family from Jamaica, and the year that the S family spent living in the Caribbean? Just wondering.
