The video of the person who was at her doorstep looked pretty ominous - - the person looked very very dangerous and I have a sinking feeling that Nancy was likely killed in her home -> prior to being taken.

I think the majority of people agree w/me on this……I think that people are probably cautious saying it out loud because of the sensitivity being that it is a celebrity’s mother.

I suspect the person might have crossed the border…where kidnapping is sorta common among criminals, and bitcoin makes this a relatively easy thing.

But most crime stems from some sort of relationship. In this case, I wonder if a caregiver, house cleaner, repairman, delivery person, etc. identified an opportunity and took it.

Or, sometimes crazy people just do crazy things. I think a crazy person wouldn’t have the foresight to remove a body…only someone with a plan to seek ransom takes a person dead or alive.

They might just be a killer for the sake of doing it. Psychopath type individual.

Right.

But killers don’t usually take bodies with them…or go the ransom route.

Maybe the ransom note(s) are fake, sent by opportunists, and this was a burglary attempt gone wrong and she was accidentally killed and body disposed.

Burglars don’t take dead bodies with them.

Kidnappers take people…although preying upon the elderly, killing them, and then seeking a ransom seems like a viable option for someone who can easily cross the border and receive bitcoin ransoms. In fact, it sounds like a money making operation. And ICYMI kidnapping for ransom is a thing in Mexico.

How is he getting the elderly woman across the border?

For those of you talking about the border, do you realize that it’s several hours away from Tucson?

It is not. It’s like an hour. I grew up in Tucson before all the border insanity and we used to go down to Nogales for lunch and shopping all the time. You’d park across from the McDonald’s on the Arizona side and walk across the border, get lunch at La caverns (until it burned down, then that other place upstairs from the fancy stores kn the courtyard). Miss both those places.

On the border, I’ll add I think it might be hard with the current hardened border to get an abducted lady across until you were a genuine coyote. But someone was talking about medicine — lots of people from Tucson historically bought prescriptions in Nogales and I’m sure you could find a pharmacist to look the other way on the paperwork for the right price or threat.

Why can’t you drive across the border? Why do you have to walk?

Your car insurance does not cover you if you drive into another country. My parents definitely would’ve been pissed if I’d driver their car into Mexico! Back then there were also a lot of problems with american cars getting stolen in north Mexico, or you’d get stopped and harassed by police and they’d impound the car or whatever. I knew lots of people that drove in if they were gojng as far as Puerto Penasco but no way was it worth it if you were just gojng to Nogales for the day.

I’m a little surprised to hear people saying there isn’t any control of cars gojng into Mexico from the American side—I would think they are checking trunks for guns at least since most of the cartel guns come from the U.S. obviously there are ways around th checkpoints but they are risky and require atvs and people who know what they are doing

Question - I’m noticing a mixture of people who both do know who Savannah Guthrie is and a good number who do not at work and among my friend group late30s-60s.

How famous is she?

I like watching morning shows when I’m on vacation so I knew her automatically.

Is she famous enough for someone to target her mother?

Broad spectrum - how old are you and did you know about her before this case?

Thanks for the explanation - I’m a lifelong Virginian. I agree I am surprised too that they don’t check people going into Mexico. Like, they don’t even check passports?

To the PP asking about ages and if we knew of Savannah: I’m 40 and knew who she was. She was the one who announced Matt Lauer’s firing on air! That was huge news in 2012.

I don’t watch the Today Show and have been surprised by all the commenters suggesting this is about “journalists.” Maybe she started as a journalist but her day job is hosting a fluffy morning show. If you wanted to make a point about journalists overall, I don’t know why you’d pick her.

I have her book about her relationship with God. I’ve only read about half of it. Very “food for thought” kind of thing. It was just what I needed at the moment when I bought it. I do hope her faith in God is helping her through this never-ending nightmare.

I’m 53 and know of her because of NBC evening news campaign coverage - I think she did at least one town hall with Trump where she was pretty hard on him. I’ve never watched the Today Show though. She does not seem famous enough to me to be targeted like this, but I do have a pretty large umbrella insurance policy and one of the renewal questions is whether you’re famous/a public figure (not sure of wording) so this is definitely a thing.

All it takes is one person who’s obsessed/a stalker … doesn’t matter how well known she is by the general public if the wrong person gets obsessed, unfortunately.

I'm 50 and have definitely heard of her. Don't watch the show. I'm sure people in town know who she is, she grew up there.

She’s not famous enough for a young male robber to know. I’m
Guessing the majority of Savannah’s fans are women
