Hayfield Football Coach Fired

Good for the MVHS parents.

Realistically, what can FCPS do at this point? Can FCPS kick Hayfield back out of the playoffs?

Mount Vernon's parents are not letting their kids play, so they are forfeiting.

No, but they can respect the VHSL finding instead of making statements about how they wholly stand behind Hayfield and recommending a lawyer for the families. Really egregious conduct by Reid and the School Board - Disrespecting the rules of the state body and ignoring all the FCPS teams that have been unfairly disadvantaged all season. And then giving Reid a raise and contract extension right in the thick of the controversy.

Run playoffs 1 week longer than normally scheduled.

It also appears schools are still contemplating a boycott. What a mess.

That not what happened either, post what truly happened, here’s the article

Didn’t read the whole story as I’m on the commute, but the headline and a brief read implies the Superintendent blocked the journalists from going their work to cover the story. That is highly unusual.

Also, there’s, no need to post the entire article. Just a link and a summary if you have time.

Reporters are allowed to stand outside public buildings and do it *all the time*. FCPS security knows they are allowed to be there.

I don't see why FCPS can't tell Hayfield their football program is suspended and they are out of the playoffs--separate from the court case and VHSL actiaon--its an FCPS school program.

This whole story gets stranger by the day.

Probably harder for FCPS actually. FCPS are state actors so all kinds of due process comes into play. VHSL had the better case but their lawyer wasn’t ready.

Are they playing football at their new school? Transferred to play a sport. Where is the VHSL investigation about them.

Transfers due to bullying is allowed.

I am sure the fact that the bullying was from an adult employee made it easier.

Pls help me understand that BEFORE a game was even played an alleged case of bullying occurred by a coach and he wasn’t fired. Was the person saying Overton or someone on his staff? Then it’s NOT one case but two, for the alleged same offense, this can’t be possible.

Some kids mom claims he was bullied because she thought her kid would be a starter at Hayfield, but quickly realized there were some better athletes in the position her kid wanted to play. She then transferred him to South County where his starting position is also on the bench and the only time the boy gets on the field is to bring the players on the field water.

Is this family white?
How many of the 30 transfers are black?

Dorsey - the Hayfield to SoCo transfer - is black.

That’s the hilarity of all of these racism claims. Football in PW and FCPS is overwhelmingly black. Go to any youth league game - it’s the center of black family socialization in the fall.

Because you don't punish innocent people for the actions of a few.

If FCPS did indeed attempt to stop the journalists from reporting on the meeting is this not a violation of the 1st Amendment? FCPS is a government entity. They may not be federal government but they certainly take money from the federal government.

Yes. This. From above linked article. Current winners or best sports parents are those at Mt Vernon for putting in writing. Also for best coaches, the 6 that signed letter to Reid. THEY are showing their kids and players what’s right. Those lessons will last longer than any game. How does one send a gift basket of thanks to an entire school of parents? They deserve it for standing up.

On Tuesday, football team parents at Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria sent a letter to the principal and athletic director, stating, “The parents of Mount Vernon High School football student-athletes stand in unified support of the Virginia High School League’s (VHSL) decision prohibiting Hayfield Secondary School’s varsity football team from participating in the 2024 and 2025 football state championship playoffs.”

They also added that they “wholly endorse” a letter from City of Fairfax School Board Chair Carolyn Pitches to the FCPS School Board. “The letter perfectly summarizes the inadequacies of FCPS’s handling of the Hayfield issue,” they said.”
