I am black. And I am sickened by ANY senseless act of violence. But the race of the victims and perps does not influence my disgust.

Is this a new "black guilt" thing?

The race of the victims and the perps does not influence my disgust, but it reinforces my trepidation around young AA men in my DC neighborhood. I hate feeling this way. It sucks.

I'm rarely NOT terrified around black men. They commit a large percentage of crime in this country, especially considering the percentage of the population that is black. It is just common sense to be scared.

don't be alarmed. that PP has shared that exact same post in many, many threads. ignore and don't feed the animals.

Goddamnit, people! Quit being so racist! Now that the perp has been revealed to be black maybe we should shut down this thread...

How did this guy get the very smart, martial arts expert SS tied up in a chair?
I just can't see that happening.

A gun, a gun, a gun. If someone is threatening you or your loved one with a gun, you would comply wouldn't you? Training or no training.

Have at it. Personal safety comes first. But, I hope you're also cautious around white males. After all, whites are the PRIMARY perpetrators when the victim is white.

No, it won't, unless you decide that it should. Decrying the assumed prejudices of others as a ways of expressing your own prejudice is a standard trick of the trade.

While I'm very sorry for this family and their loved ones, this thread long ago became an illustration of the pervasive neurosis and narcissism of the Upper NW 1%-ers. A terrible crime was committed, and it revealed how insecure many of you are that you don't really deserve what you have and that others will try to take it away from you. The vile speculation about the two housekeepers will not be forgotten.

Please. Anyone looking to use this case as a way to continue to make assumptions about AA men (BTW, this guy is Jamaican-American) are already set in their ways and aren't looking to change their minds.

There are plenty of horrific crimes committed by white males. (didn't one just happen in Rockville?) Do you have similar concerns?

Did your business allow you to live in a $5M mansion?

The point is no small retail business requires the owner to have $40K in the till. It's a big red flag.

If you read the Washington Post article, Savvas probably did NOT have $40k available at the business. He was making a "flurry of calls" including to the bank and his accountant. Obviously working to raise cash.

I guess that is all he could come up with. Poor man..I couldn't imagine calling an accountant, assistant, some other construction exec, etc trying to ask them for an instant cash loan and he probably wasn't able to tell them the real reason and the urgency of the situation. If he said it was for art I bet nobody was really taking him seriously..ugh

I can't believe the bank, accountant, assistant, etc. did not think raising all this cash was unusual. NO legitimate business deal needs that amount in CASH.

1. That's probably why Mr. S. was only able to raise $40,000 total (we can infer) beyond what might have been in the house in the safe.
2. I can think of a number of things I might be able to say in order to raise cash quickly, and I'm not motivated to save my and my family's lives. Could be different stories for different people.
To bank/accountant: "I am buying a piece of art/classic car, and I will get a 30% discount from the seller if I can pay in cash."
To friend in industry: "I've gotten a woman pregnant. She will take care of it but she wants a cash settlement to keep it private and not tell my wife."
To assistant: art story, or "one of the subcontractors is willing to work overtime if we can pay in cash."
"My housekeeper is moving back to her home, and I want to give her enough cash to buy a house in her native country."

I could think of more.

And I'm sure I could think of more reasons.

Yeah well you also have the benefit of sitting on a computer coming up with these knowing your family is safe and in no immediate danger. He did not have that luxury so I guess a less than perfect story is to be excused, no?

exactly. thank you. that post was absurd.

Ah...before you wrote this, I thought you were actually someone to take seriously. Nevermind.

He got in, perhaps killed the maid immediately, and then started demanding $ from the mom once she got home. She said her husband was the one in charge of it and she could not get any money and he said to get the husband there. The husband got home, and then just kept trying to get cash and satisfy the guy as things escalated. If someone hired a hitman to go after this family, the crime would have taken ten minutes. No one commissions an overnight hostage/torture/extortion episode.

This is what happened. Then he got comfortable and ordered a pizza.

No. I think I earned what I have (actually I know we did). I'm afraid of a random criminal killing my family. Has nothing to do with narcissism or insecurity. (and I never pinned it on the maid).

Now they need to find him and his accomplice(s). I hope the police really checked hard into the younger brother. And any connection with the young woman set on fire in MD.

And it looks random. So we can all be scared. Like the Pettits and Goffs and the Harveys in Richmond. Just awful and random.

Incidentally, look at the Fox News comments. They are soooo terribly racist. It makes the situation even worse, if that is possible.

I hope they find them soon.

NW mom here getting obsessed with reading about this story- horrified and sad for those two girls especially who have lost their family - I wonder if there is anything we can do for the girls, any outpouring of support from the community? (maybe that is too intrusive for them and weird to get letters of support from strangers....) I can't imagine how upside down their lives have been turned and my heart goes out to them.... thinking of what happened to their brother (let alone the rest of the family) makes me cry it is so sad.....

On other note, anyone thinking of implementing a "safe word" for their family to trigger a warning if this happens... ( I know it is rare chance, and hopefully a freakish isolated incidence) but maybe a safe word system could help warn people over the phone/text???
