Jumped from #11 to #4 at Yu Ying yesterday. Now we really have our hopes up. Would be heartbreaking if we don't make it now. |
I cannot imagine a scenario where you don't get in. It's only May and just past the enrollment deadline. Lists typically move a bunch during the summer and early fall, and this year I think will be more movement than usual. |
Out of curiosity, what would cause her child to get off the waitlist now? People moving away, You Ying deciding to enlarge the class, etc? Presumably she upped to #4 based on people enrolling their kids- what generally cause more movement at this point? (Lottery newbie obviously) |
People for whom YY is not their first choice get off the WL at their higher-ranked school, enroll at the higher-ranked school, and open up a spot at YY. Sometimes those people take their siblings with them and open up even more spots. |
Yeah, there are a variety of reasons. Current students get off the waitlist elsewhere or do not re-enroll because they move away, and their incoming PK3 sibling moves with them. People on the waitlist offered a spot and decline. People removing themselves from the waitlist. |
Sometimes people's first choice is a neighborhood school and without some kind of preference they won't get in right away. For example, if I had the best number of all for PK4, but ranked Ross above YY, I might get into YY but as a nonsibling, not get into Ross until later. |
Also most people will reenroll now, but will actually not attend and unenroll later as their summer and fall plans become more firm. |

Ok, looking for tea-leave readers.
For PK4, we were #20 for J.O. Wilson, which is one of our top choices (we are not IB). Just jumped to #12. I'm guessing it's almost entirely due to people who were on the waitlist above us enrolling at schools they ranked higher, but I was surprised at the leap because last year the the PK3 lists for JOW barely moved (and we had a lower waitlist spot). Any insight into whether this is just a fluke jump or if we stand an actual chance? It's very hard to get into any of the Cap Hill elementaries from OOB (we totally struck out last year) so I'm trying to temper my expectations. Especially because I've heard PK4 is a notoriously hard year -- we had told ourselves there was a good chance we'd have to wait until K to get a spot anywhere on the Hill other than our IB (Miner). |
Why are you not happy at Miner and what are you looking to get elsewhere? I'm not clear JOW is better except for the middle.school feed. Are you really aiming for Brent, Maury, or SWS. If so are you just going to keep jumping schools? |
Also curious why you want to leave Miner. Have heard really good things about ece there. I’m also a parent of a pk3 who didn’t get in to the IB school and was about to enroll at miner. As you note, very hard to get into most cap hill pk3/pk4 oob, so feeling lucky to have miner as an option. |
PK4 can be an easier year at some schools. It just depends if the total number of seats the school offers goes up or not. I am also unclear why this is better than Miner. |
Several reasons. Commute to JOW is better for us (no major thoroughfares to cross, in right direction for our commutes). Also prefer the MS feed, though who knows where we will be by then. Our DC also has two friends from nanny share at JOW and it would be nice to keep them together. None of these are deal breakers and we’d be fine staying at Miner, but JOW is a better fit for our family. We also really liked it when we toured 2 years ago. |
All fine reasons. I predict you will get in easily. |
Just an idea - email the registrar and say you’re 4th and really want to go and ask what to expect? |
Do schools also have some leeway with the number of kids in each class? I.e. do spots only open up if someone uinenrolls or could a school add a few kids to a class? |
