Those who scored the highest were atheists and agnostics, as well as two religious minorities: Jews and Mormons. The results were the same even after the researchers controlled for factors like age and racial differences.

“Even after all these other factors, including education, are taken into account, atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons still outperform all the other religious groups in our survey,” said Greg Smith, a senior researcher at Pew.

“Why did atheists do so well? The study concluded that those who reject faith often do so after growing up in a religious household, and studying and deliberating keeping the faith. Also, atheists and agnostics tend to be better educated in general. Why did Christians do so poorly? It may be because once someone accepts a faith, they stop examining it.”

Time for a new survey! It’s been almost ten years now and I bet religious people have studying like crazy to improve their scores.

Just reading this thread, it’s obvious how embarrassed some religious people are about being beat out by atheists and agnostics.

Thanks for all the typing... but they’re not reporting on the claim at 15:08, that atheists “know a lot about religion.” Nor does either of them say that.

If we grade on a curve, then they are f#cking geniuses compared to the Christians.

Yes, 15:08 can now say “atheists/agnostics know A LITTLE MORE about the basics of Christianity than Christians do and A LOT MORE about the basics of world religions than Christians”. Maybe Jeff can just pin that comment up at the top so we don’t need to rehash it.

Please! Great idea!

You need to go back to statistics 101. Pew says Catholics know more about Catholic theology than atheists. All Christians know more about the four Gospels than atheists. Thanks

Atheist pp’s obsessive posting about how much atheists understand religion is so bogus and disengenuous.

Why is that irrelevant? Wouldn't that be the baseline for how much someone understands religion?

It’s irrelevant to the claim that “atheists know a lot about religion” in 15:08’s post.

C’mon people, this is basic reading skills.

Seems like they do.

¯\_(?)_/¯

They don’t. Pew says 39% of atheists could name all 4 gospels.

LOL. What is the fixation on that one question? There were 12 basic questions on Christianity and atheists did better than Christians on them. Sorry, truth hurts.

This thread is a sh!tstorm of atheists actually lying about Pew’s results. And lying about the atheist post at 15:08 that started it all.

We don’t grade on the curve for individual questions. Just the final score. Didn’t you attend college? Maybe it was Liberty College?

Nope. Not on the Catholic communion question. Not on the where was a Jesus born question. Pew has revised the Protestant works vs. faith question. And who the heck cares if atheists knew that Mother Theresa was a Catholic? None of these are actual substance.

Imagine how poorly the Christians will do on an in-depth test if they can’t even answer these very simple BASIC questions.

What valid points? “Atheists are lying” is not a good point because IT DID NOT HAPPEN.

Let me know what you make a good point and I’ll dig out my 40-year-old response.

Until then, I’ll just laugh at your butt hurt.

The immaturity and fact twisting by the atheists on this thread is astounding. I almost feel sorry for Pew, having their study misrepresented so badly DCUM’s atheists. Plus there such rhetorical babies that it’s kind of disgusting to hang out with them. I’m outta here.

I feel bad for Pew that one of their employees is making them look like an irrational fool. Hopefully he/she works in the cafeteria and not in research.

The “go back to statistics 101 poster” has valid points. None of you wants to address them. You just want to spew childish insults. Disgusting for a 40-year-old, if you really are. How’s your parents basement?
