If I had to pick another good-looking Asian male lead, I'd go with Daniel Henney but maybe he's too old for the part?

Ridiculous. Then they didn't try hard enough.

There are many good Asian actors, some of whom are already known in the US.

John Cho, of Star Trek and Harold and Kumar fame is a fantastic choice. He recently made his leading man debut in the movie Searching.
Lee Byung-hun has been in several major movies including two GI Joe movies. Although his exposure to the US is through action movies, his origins in Korean TV are in non-action drama.
Harry Shum, Jr, of Glee fame is well known to US audiences.
Telly Leung, also of Glee fame, but also well known both on and off Broadway is fully Asian
James Kyson of Heroes fame.
Rick Yune has been in several big box office films including the Fast and Furious franchise and the James Bond franchise.

This is just a short list. There are many, many qualified fully Asian men who are qualified leading men, but Hollywood just isn't ready to cast a fully Asian man as a leading man unless it's an action adventure film where he can fit so many whitewashed Hollywood stereotypes.

I don't know what you think is wrong with Henry Golding. He fits the role. It's about the role and many of the actors you mentioned wouldn't have carried the role the same way.

I have nothing against Henry Golding. And if they want to stand behind their decision, they should do so. However, the excuse that they could not find a fully-Asian leading man is just a bad response and should never have been stated. That's saying that out of thousands of Asian actors that none of is a viable leading man. I agree that Golding did a good job. But they need to state that they picked Golding because of his merits, not a lame excuse that they couldn't find a fully-Asian leading actor.

Not 9ne of those men you listed are romantic leading men actors.

It was such a bad movie, I am utterly disappointed.

I do is so agree. I walked out of there thinking “how on earth did anyone have anything good to say about this?” The acting was abysmal and movie just plain boring

The character Nick isn’t half-white either, but the actor is.

I thought it was really odd that they picked a half white actor to play the part of a full Chinese man

Yeah bc there are so few Chinese men on the planet.

No, it's because Asian women don't date Asian men. Half white actor makes it more believable from Rachel's perspective.

But his character was supposed to be completely Asian. This actor is obviously not completely Asian.

This movie doesn’t interest me. Indian American.the book Just seems like pulp. I loved “in the mood for love, on the other hand.”

Not the PP,

Not this movie for sure.

There are plenty cute, funny, and clever romantic comedies. Based on the hype, I expected at least “Legally Blonde” level, but this was “So bad, it’s almost good” type of movie.

I finally saw it and I loved it. My husband thought it was OK. Loved the over the top scenery and characters. Great movie. I'd see it again.

Finally saw this. It did not live up to the hype.

Great that it’s an all Asian cast and set in Asia.
Love Akwafina and Ken Jeong in anything.

What fell apart for me was the story. The story is Hallmark drivel. The characters are 100% evil one minute, and sweet and funny the next. The plot was actually boring when it shouldn’t have been.

Also, no one is talking about how it is really glorifying Uber-wealth. Like can you imagine owning all this stuff wealth.

The story was not innovative in the slightest. It was just a bodice ripper cheesy Cinderella story but set in Asia with Asian characters.

Also, I found it completely unbelievable that they had been dating for a year in NY and she had no idea who he was or how much money he came from. No way.

Also, I kept asking myself, how can she take this much time off from being a top NYU economics professor? (The youngest one ever?)

I finally watched it on demand this week. I was excited to see it and excited for an all Asian cast but I felt similarly to the PP above I felt it reinforced stereotypes. The plot was typical Hollywood which I didn't mind. But something about it didn't sit right with me. Glad I didn't see it in the theater.

The movie was awful. Really terrible.

I thought I would love it because I did like the book. But the movie was not the same and the acting was BAD. I had to stop myself from walking out.

Different PP here. I like some subtitled European movies and some documentaries. I also like funny and clever romantic comedies, i.e. not the one we are discussing. It was terrible.
