I think you overestimate the teacher unions in VA. VA is a Right To Work state. There is no collective bargaining agreement. |
Your math would be fine IF teachers worked only eight hours per day, and if they only worked the 194 days they are "on contract." I don't know ANY teachers who work only eight hours per day, nor do I know any teachers who only work their contract days. In fact, most teachers I know work (M-F) 10-12 hours/day at the school itself, then an additional 2-4 hours/day at home. On average, teachers I know work approximately 13 hours/day Monday-Friday, and an additional 5-10 hours each weekend. They also work at least half of their holidays throughout the school year. |

Many professional people work far more than 40hrs/week.
And 10/12 hours a day at the school? Not at my kids' school. |
I don't think the previous post was saying that many people don't work more than 40/week. It was only pointing out that the example was basing the hourly rate on a 40 hour week. My DW and I both teach in elementary schools within FCPS. Honestly, I'd say we are pretty typical of the teachers in our buildings. A typical day for me amounts to about 9 hours in the building and another hour at home in the evening. On the weekend I probably spend another hour or two on Sunday night. I know very few who spend 10-12 hours a day in the building. |

Personally I think all parents should contribute a small amount each month to the teacher's salary. If 30 families contributed $500 a year, that's another $15k a year.
(Unless the family is poor). |
Which a large percentage of FCPS students' families claim to be. |
Are we not already paying 100% of it? |
Plus many PTA's ask parents to spend another $100 per child to the PTA and much of that money goes to school supplies and teacher supplies. The title 1 schools already get more money for this stuff. |
I think ethics rules limit them to $100 per year per person |
Screw that. They have a totally secure job, fantastic fringe benefits, excellent retirement, and much more vacation than the private sector. Any of 'em who thinks that's not enough can fuck off and quit. Plenty of others will happily take their places. |
Will you? |
| Fairfax county needs to step up Asap and increase teacher's salaries. Our school has been loosing excellent teachers left and right, and it is a shame. We are presumably the richest county in USA and still can not safeguard the interests of the ones who are working on making our future strong. |
When they spend the money wisely, we can talk about that. |
Who are they please clarify? |
| How come Montgomery county can afford 17K per year more salary for teachers. |
