The Board of Supervisors cannot let this continue. When the FCPS budget is not fully funded, the whole county suffers.

NP here. 5K is about 8% more. I think it's worth noting. The salary gap between MCPS and FCPS is not great for a first year teacher; it grows each year. I think this disparity will persist as long as anti-poaching rules make it difficult for teachers to move easily between school systems. |

Parent here. And Arlington is 25% more. It always amazes me that as a culture we justify paying CEOs millions of dollars regardless of what boneheaded decisions they make, and find ways to demean the people in charge of giving our kids an education. Whatever. You get what you pay for, folks. I'm glad my kids won't be in FCPS for much longer. |

The chart on page 38 of this report shows the difference between Fairfax and Arlington at year 10 to be about $16k. Prince William is ahead by about $1,200.
Fairfax is ahead of Loudoun and Manassas Park at step 10. |

I'm not saying we shouldn't pay teachers more, but...
I have those same qualifications and make a full-time salary a little less than depicted on the chart. I work in the public sector. |

I'm not a teacher and I would not want to be one at that salary. You do realize that teachers work during the evenings and probably on weekends grading papers, etc? Being a teacher is a hard, thankless job, especially in this country where teachers aren't given the respect they deserve. I have kids in FCPS and their teachers have ranged from amazing to shouldn't be teaching anyone bad. I think the latter category is the result of not having enough really good people wanting to teach because this area is too expensive to live on a teacher's salary. |

I also work for Fairfax County. Schools are funded to the detriment of other services. I have an MA and 10 years experience in my field but have not seen an increase above a non-fully funded CoLA since 2008 while teachers were getting grade and step increases. The retirement benefit keeps me here but I get paid about 25% less than other jurisdictions pay my specialty.
My kids go to school here and I appreciate the good schools and teachers but what would you cut to increase their pay? |

If I were still a teacher, I would be at that 10 year mark (w/Masters) and quite honestly happy with the Fairfax pay. That said, I am not a teacher anymore because as someone else said it is a thankless job and consumes more than the school day.
My kids will attend FCPS and I would be happy to pay increased taxes to improve teacher salary, thus retention and overall education. |
