At DC privates - Why are VA parents considered "inferior"?

Anonymous
I'm afraid to say that the people we know from our very near-in suburbs that send their kids into DC are some of the most annoying parents and kids I have ever met. Sorry you have to put up with them. Parents and kids don't fit in here - and don't fit in there. It sort of makes sense if you think about it.....

Welcome to VA! We live in VA but sent our children to a DC private for preschool. We left after a couple of years for our local public school and couldn't be happier. Our children are receiving a great education and the people are much nicer, friendlier and real.

Actually our taxes pay for all the wear and tear VA commuters bring to our city since we cant charge a commuter tax. As for these expensive. "Illegals" they are pretty much doing all the work citizens wont do. But that is another thread. Your comment encapsulates why we are reticent to schedule playdates with VA families.

Please stay in Virginia. Don't you have a trip to King's Dominiom to plan or some grocery shopping to do? I was actually reading this post with both amusement and horror, but now I feel compelled to just get snarky too. This is what posts like this do to people! Honestly, yes there are great things to do in NOVA and I think both DC (assuming one afford private school which is why I even find myself in this forum and biggest failure of DC and we all know it) and VA have great things to offer kids and families. But PP, with such a non-witty, and quite frankly, stupid, response to a great list of DC attractions you are feeding right into the stereotype that Virginians aren't very-well educated or worldly. Don't you see that? Really, don't you? "The national mall? Stupid! Rather be at King's Dominion." Your response to this list has less wit, humor and intelligence than a response my 5-year-old could have come up with. And what are you doing on a board called "DCUM" in the independent School forum anyway? No offense, but it seems quite clear from your response that you likely did not achieve a great education anywhere (whether private or public) or that you are the type of person honestly tryimg to explore the independent school route in DC for your children. "Sidwell? Never heard of it but it sounds like a loser school." "Maret? Don't know how to pronounce it but sounds totally boring and lame!".

Do I really need to go on here???

Are you delusional? Who are you quoting here? I never said these things (see bolded above). Come on - have I ever heard of Sidwell? I am a real Washingtonian. Of course I have. I am a lawyer btw - so I have a fine education thank you. And my gifted child will certainly NOT go to any DC school - public or private. For now she is slated to attend the Marshall pyramid, which is #3 in VA. Unless she does TJ.

And because I am a real Washingtonian, the Mall and Smithsonian, etc. are not a list of "attractions" as you like to call them. At least not to me anyway. Locals do not lose sleep over missing a weekend at the Smithsonian - we've done it so many times. If you were from here, you'd understand.

OP: To VA for lots of outdoor space and to DC for the schools like I had in Massachusetts. What answers are there that I will find?

But this is exactly the point. Why do you need "lots of space," outdoors or not? How many people live at your house... 20? Or is it that you need room for all of your "toys" -- your pool, your media room, your tacky furniture, your cars. THIS is what DC people turn up their noses at.

Because we think it is good for kids to have lots of space outdoors to run and play that is just outside our house And we don't like to be squashed like sardines in an old, tiny 3 bedroom colonial in which the third bedroom is really the size of a coat closet.

You don't care for these things? Great. Different strokes, and all that. But maligning all people who live in Va is a little weird.

There are tons of big houses with lots of space in DC. You probably can't afford it. That's why you have this inferiority complex. I mean after all you started this thread. Sorry but you and your kids will always be considered as va carpet baggers. Yes even parents act like we're in high school.

Arrested development is what is plaguing this country and why I, someone who grew up in Europe, is absolutely terrified at the prospect of my son having to go to high school in the US.

OP: No complex personally - want to ensure children stay happy - and so I raised it - written in a way to catch attention. We are a lovely balanced family that have lived all over the world and went to the best schools and want the same for our children. "Big houses" are not important, regardless of what we can "afford" - we love the children running around, simple. And socially - sorry we have no interest in "climbing" - as I said, we don't need to! But this thread has been interesting!

oP, by posting this question you gave free reign to a bunch of mean girls to whom you proceeded to justify yourself. I feel like you care about being accepted, it is obvious. But that is your problem, not being able to live an unapologetic life where you own your choices and owe no explanation to anyone unless someone actually asked you a genuine question.

But just Virginia suburbanites are annoying, right? You exempt those of us who live in Maryland from your disdain.

If not, you are just a hypocrite.

FYI: I live in North Arlington, right across Chain Bridge. I can leave my house at 7:30 and be at St. Pats in 6 minutes. And GDS takes maybe one minute more. What lights? The light at Chain Bridge for those of us coming down Glebe is always green. And when traveling at 7:30, we don't encounter bad traffic.

Eww Arlington. Let me guess. Government employee? GS something. You probably are the person from va with not one but 2 st pats stickers on your car. Hey look at me!

Wrong. DH is "biglaw" partner. HHI is almost 3M. We choose to live in VA because of the lower tax burden. We also don't live in a McMansion, but in a 1930s Tudor.

You are a bigot.

And you choose to send your kids to school in DC (I assume) because....?

Not the PP but I assume it's because they believe that particular school is the best fit for their child and they are able to make both the finances and the logistics work.

Well, I am the PP she addressed, but the person who responded is correct. We send our kids to the schools that best suit them as individuals. Those schools happen to be in DC, but as I have said, it takes us no time to get there.

But this is the entire point. DC is good enough.. better, obviously, for your kids but you yourselves refuse to live there, to invest yourselves in the city. You keep your money in VA because of lower taxes. Don't you see how that comes across as hypocritical?

Not at all. These are not DC schools; they are independent private schools. And we do invest in DC, not just through the federal funds that the City gets, or the sales taxes that we pay, but through our contributions to many DC non-profits, including Martha's Table, the Shakespeare Theatre, the Smithsonian, the Kennedy Center - I lose count of all the charities to whom we give thousands of dollars. And I mean thousands EACH, not total.

And if that is your only objection to Virginia residents, why welcome all the Marylanders? You can't have it both ways, saying that close-in Maryland citizens are welcome in NW schools but not close-in Virginians.

Who ever said we welcome Marylanders in DC private schools? I agree; the people who live just over Western Avenue line in MD, yet continually plow down WI Ave every day, are just as annoying, and yes, hypocritical. Thanks for all the "thousands" you supposedly pour into DC charities, but the bottom line is, you still must think you're too good to live here. Gotta hang onto those guns and tax dollars, right?

Not OP and not sure s/he wrote all those responses but I think s/he said her kids experienced it and it seems s/he was responding below but its true, this thread brought out the ugly that exists behind the veneer...

So many things wrong here. Where to start.

1. The thread is about Virginia parents - not all suburb dwellers. Are we supposed to be grateful that you are heaping disdain on Maryland now, too?

2. Too good to live in DC? I thought the point of this thread was that VA parents aren't good enough for DC schools? I would happily live in DC if the high taxes got you anything comparable to the services we get in Arlington. Moreover, I like have a vote that counts. Can't get that in DC. But too good? Honestly, I think most people make the choices that are right for their families. Period. My choice is right for mine, and I don't appreciate your making assumptions about them when you don't even know me. You note that I am not making such judgments about you?

3. Nice stereotypes. I am a liberal Democrat and have been my whole life. I am absolutely in favor of gun control. Your pre-conceived notions are - as usual - asinine.

I lived in Europe (Switzerland) and was horrified by the daily racism. I guess because I'm a WASP, Europeans felt free to share their attitudes towards minorities with me.

And if you want to talk about snobbery, go to Britain for class snobbery, France for cultural snobbery.... Need I go on? I have lots of relatives still in Europe and I know of what I speak. You sound like an a$$ for pretending none of this exists chez toi.

And I'd be absolutely terrified to send my kids to HS in Britain where they'd be exposed to the chav drinking culture.

Love VA - the commute to DC (from close in arlington), the parks, the space, the roads, the taxes, the vote that counts for democrats, the chance to be away from people who are so superficial to rule out entire parts of the region. Sorry to pollute your private schools with such rational thinking people instead of gut prejudice.

HS Chav drinking culture as opposed to ughhh, the superb hypocrisy of a country that allows you to drive at 16, buy guns, vote, go to war at 18, but does not allow you to drink until 21??? At least there is no pretense there and if you find people who are genuinely accepting of other races/nationalities, they will be for real, not forced by laws hypocrites.
