His waffling re: Pinto's Emergency Crime Bill was a concerning disgrace. He needs to understand that the community is what he represents, not some ideology.
An actual human being was shot and actual shooters escaped running across a playground on a Saturday afternoon in a historically safe area of the city. This is not just a renter's problem. Stray bullets could hit anyone driving by heading to P&P, walking to BF, etc. Street crime is an issue for a neighborhood that values walkability and biking. School quality has always been prized, if the streets are so chaotic will there be spillover into issues there? If people move to W3 for safety and schools, however they pay their rent, shouldn't those things be maintained? |
Surely just a coincidence, eh? He is turning out to be not only weak but slimy. No stream announced, no widespread communication, word games, etc. I expect him to be out and about at Art all Night, be sure to express your sentiments. Can't enjoy biking or pickleball on a Saturday afternoon when bullets are flying around. |
A livestream or recording is not in Frumin’s interest as it will result is more Ward 3 residents learning about both the increase in crime here and how little Matt is willing to do about it. He seems obsessed with “traffic calming” safety measures, but could care less about the increasing incidents of violent crime which impact—yes, pedestrians!! The same people he seems to want to protect via a push to lower car traffic to a trickle. Maybe now he will show some interest? Doubt it. |
From his newsletter so folks have it

People concerned with bike lanes and walkability, as I am, need to recognize that people are more inclined to rely on cars when crime is spiking. I've heard several people tell me they now drive to the Giant at Cathedral Commons because they do not want to walk through the strung out panhandlers in front. |
Submit questions in advance so he can cherry pick ones like “Matt, why do you care so much about this issue?” |
Really glad to see there will be a live stream and hopefully a recording.
I hope there are some ideas besides the temporary MPD camera that was already in the works. |
A stream is mentioned with a YT link but there are no vids posted there and no indication a recording will be saved and available. Suggest others reach out to his office to request, especially in light of BTS night. |
The MPD was in fact defunded. The number of officers has dropped to its lowest level in over 20 years even as annual murders have almost tripled (!) over the last decade. |
And park in a parking garage? I’m much more creeped out by parking garages than walking in a public area. This is a canard. |
Temporary MPD camera was not there but may well appear by 7pm. But, that was requested and in process prior to the shooting based on yet another round of endless meetings between MPD and The Brandywine. I am a bit nervous about Frumin's word "comprehensive" given his shocking take on the Emergency Crime Bill.
It's not a given that the tax base will stay if crime and crime/hard drug use on metro trains and buses is not reined in. And with the CRE implosion the fiscal future of dc is going to be challenging. With the recent international publicity for DC re: crime and crime + high cost of living = undesirable place to live, the tourist income has to be a concern, too. There is only $ for all the things DSA and DC Justice Lab value if there is revenue. That means basic government needs to function. |
Different poster but I've heard the same. I also know people who moved out of DC in part because of the scene outside Giant, woman followed more than once, etc. Some people drive to close in Bethesda stores who previously walked to Cathedral Commons. Walking around Forest Hills on the weekend does not feel as safe and the frequent sirens are unnerving and stressful. I believed people in W7 & W8 who described the toll crime takes, the city has got to take a different stance. And that means AG and USAO prosecuting, Council rolling back some of their legislative excess and Congress providing additional needed funds AND oversight to the federal players in our CJ "ecosystem" as Bowser likes to call it. We need a reset or eventually we may end up with another control board as tax revenue craters. Downtown is a ghost town, all that CRE revenue used to cover a lot of bike lanes, pickleball courts and similar. I don't see how Housing First as implemented by the District with the vast overpayments, despite HUD audit, is feasible financially long term. A lot of the recipients are quite young, but have PSH vouchers. Public housing is very expensive. Private public housing is unaffordable. And that is before you consider the spillover impacts as no one has frankly done since Chris Geldart. |
Many people will skip shopping there altogether. |
Your individual experience (or talking point you are cutting and pasting) does NOT invalidate the experiences of others. The strident, dismissive tone and attempts to control discourse around crime of course do not alter the reality of crime up in every category. |
