Yeah, that’s where they got the idea

I learned through the social media grapevine that a friend of a friend who I used to hang out with my 20s died by being hit by a falling tree branch on a run.

This is such a fear of mine.

I was at the beach recently over spring break and these people were trying to get their umbrella into the sand by twisting it left and right, left and right, and I said to my husband "that ain't gonna cut it" and sure enough a huge gust of wind hit and it came flying directly at me, pole side directly coming right at me. I flung myself out of my chair and hit the ground! Everyone freaked out after that! I went over and showed them how to properly get it in there, and they were barely listening, just shaking from it. I'm like, same....

This happened to me too. The person who had put the pole in the sand was infuriatingly cavalier about the whole thing. I got a concussion and my vacation was ruined, but it could have been so much worse.

You need to have the kids who rent out the umbrellas put them in the sand for you. They know how to do it. And if you own an umbrella, learn how to place it correctly.

Seriously. I'd rather just rent the umbrella and have the person who does it 100x a day dig it in for me. If you give them $5 they'll help you with your own umbrella, too.

Wow, I remember this happening at a local elementary school in this area as well just about 5 years ago to a little boy. He got crushed to death bc someone accidentally pressed the switch right as he was crossing from one part of the gym to the other.

Meant to say, also by an automatic wall divider.

Was this on the Long Island Expressway? I remember that accident. It was someone slightly famous, but I can't remember.

It was the director Alan Pakula who died that way on the LEI - a pipe came off a vehicle, bounced off the roadway and in through his front windshield impaling him.

Wasnt this scene in The Omen?

Also some freak accident in the UK where something from the road was dislodged and killed a famous DJ.

DJ Kemistry, one of the first well known female DJs in the 90s and a pioneer in the development of drum n bass music. She founded the Metalheadz record label, arguably the best drum n bass label of all time.

She was killed by a steel cat’s eye that dislodged from the road.

Kind of similar. when I was five, the high school girl in the house across the street from me set her basement bedroom and herself on fire. My parents and the entire neighborhood connected hoses and brought water and tried to go down the basement to save her. My dad almost fell to the basement on the crumbling stairs. My mom was a nurse and helped care for her in the hospital.before she died, in the hospital she said she changed her mind and wanted to live. She had seemed so lovely and nice and full of life before that – it’ set an early impression on me that people may not be as happy as they seem, and to try to be really kind to everyone, even on a passing daily basis.

Over thr course of a half an hour they discussed the death, and it wasn't clear if it was murder or accidental. They decided to cover it up. My parents debated naming me after the shooter uncle, but gave me a more American name.

There was a guy who was catering a wedding in the UK. It was a multi-day wedding for the daughter of a media mogul. Anyway, one of her brothers was addicted to coke. That brother got one of the caterers to drive him to a local dealer in the dark. If I recall correctly, it was also raining that night. Both the brother and the caterer were already high AF by the time the caterer started driving. He was tired and zoned out. He hit a truck, car flipped, smashed the car into a body of water, drowned and died. The brother survived and hitchhiked back to the accommodation. It was very unfortunate watching the caterer die that way.

Succession?

How tragic.

Do you know why the brake disengaged?

No. Sadly, she left a husband and two teenaged sons.

Friend’s mom fell up the stairs while carrying a full laundry basket. Major brain bleed and never resumed consciousness.

A co-worker of mine fell down the steep stairs at a concert venue back in 1997. (It may have been Merriweather Post Pavillion). It was terrible - she was only in her twenties at the time and was a beautiful young woman. She struck her head on the cement and was on life support for a while. #RIP Lori

College friend tried passing a car on a two-lane road in NJ and was struck head-on. #RIP Kevin

I remember the MPP death. Classmate was her fiancé or newlywed.

Years ago, a woman in our local McDonald's drive thru dropped some money as she was paying the cashier. She opened the door of her car to bend over to retrieve the change off the ground and, in doing so, her foot let up on the brake, making the car role forward, causing the door to close tightly on her head.

Another one that happened, was when I was in college. A student drove his motorcycle behind the back of our dorm towards the dumpster area not seeing the chain that had been drawn across that service road, restricting access to that area. He hit that chain at chest level, killing him nearly instantly. I was in my dorm room studying when I heard the "BOOM" of him hitting the chain. Such a random, haunting, needless death.

One more motorcycle incident. A semi professional stunt motorcycle driver was hanging around an apartment parking lot with friends. On a lark, he decided to demonstrate some simple little trick with his motorcycle that he did all the time. But this time the accelerator stuck pitching him headfirst into a dumpster, killing him instantly. He had not been planning to ride his motorcycle at the time so he did not have his helmet on.
