Do Local Republicans Want to Gut or Reform FCPS?

In total agreement. The county and FCPS in particular functioned much better when there wasn’t total dominance by preening, hypocritical, incompetent buffoons like the current all-D School Board. And they need to stop using Covid as an excuse for all their malfeasance - people see through that nonsense.

So you’d prefer more Rs focusing on making it illegal to be trans, arresting women who have abortions and re-rewriting history to make it look like white people are the victims. Yeah, that’ll fix everything.

Ok? PP asked about MAGAs

Actually, PP asked about your reference to "MAGAs and their associates."

So explain what you mean by your language, and why you think it matters in an upcoming local School Board election.

We get it, you think that MAGA policies are acceptable and mainstream. You're free to vote for candidates who represent your world view, just don't be surprised when they lose in a blue county

In other words, you can't answer the question, but only use buzzwords and then imply guilt by association.

And I'm trying to find candidates who represent my priorities when it comes to public education in Fairfax County, not my entire "world view."

Good for you. Anyone who has endorsed vouchers or school choice or pressed for investigations into CRT or tried to get books they disagree with pulled from libraries (i.e. MAGA and maga adjacent policies) is someone that I won't vote for. Fortunately, those people are unelectable in Fairfax

The left banned 'Off Mice and Men,' Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,' and Dr. Seuss books. Are they now MAGA adjacent? Interdistrict school choice has existed in FCPS for decades, as well school choice for families with IEPs.

The Seuss family business decided to stop producing/selling books. That’s not “banning”.

It rather seems like they were stampeded into that decision, and did it to stop the entire oeuvre from being banished.

Note that after they stopped producing/selling those books, you also stopped being able to purchase them on Ebay, which blocked the ISBN. This ban still seems in effect, though they've stopped hunting the title. Multiple libraries purged it from their collections. But ALA is never going to mention it during banned books week.

When the Rs ban a book - you just can’t get it at school.
When the libs ban a book you don’t have access to it anywhere and they pressure book stores not to sell it either.

When you juxtapose Rs and libs, you lose credibility. Try Rs and Ds or conservatives and liberals if you don't want to sound like a partisan hack.

It’s the Democrats who have made trans rights the only issue that anyone can ever discuss. Case in point.

And history is far more complicated than a simple narrative about good (minorities) and bad (white) people, although you (and others like Frisch, Meren, and Omeish) appear to believe otherwise. Opposing that simplistic narrative in favor of teaching both the good and the bad about our nation’s history is a good thing.

It’s time to restore some balance to FCPS.

Do you have any idea how long it took to get Title IX--which includes women in sports?

How is it treating girls fairly to have transgender girls competing in sports? This is not a clear issue.

Not only that, but there is no clear definition of what a "trans" person is. Is a "gender fluid" person trans? Can you be "trans" one day and back to biology the next? Are you "trans" if you tell your teachers you are? Does wearing a dress make a boy a "trans girl?"

I don't know the answer to these questions. I do know that the questions confused the issue when the girl was assaulted in Loudoun County.

I think FCPS has --unlike your comment about dog ----bent over backwards to give the trans community everything it has asked for at the expense of those who have concerns.

Every child should be treated compassionately--but not at the expense of all the others. The mainstream also deserve compassionate treatment.

They weren't very thorough, DD's reading group is doing Of Mice and Men, or are you referring to Off Mice and Men which does seem to have been effectively wiped from the internet

For all the talk about R censorhsip - what have the Rs thoroughly banned in FCPS? They are probably still reading Beloved here.

They haven't been elected in Fairfax. If you want to look state wide to see what would happen:

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
Shatter Me series of 6 books by Tahereh Mafi (Defy Me, Ignite Me, Restore Me, Shatter Me, Imagine Me, Unravel Me)
Tar Baby by Toni Morrison
The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
Sula by Toni Morrison
Love by Toni Morrison
The Tale of the Body Thief by Anne Rice
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson
Empire of Storms by Sarah Maas
Bag of Bones by Stephen King
11/22/63: A Novel by Stephen King
It by Stephen King
Furyborn by Claire Legrand

My biggest concern is that the current board banned math, chemistry, physics, history and English text books from the entire FCPS.

They banned them? Really? Not, they don’t use textbooks anymore…but they straight up banned them? Can you show me a link?

Candidates are responsible for their own actions. If they choose to partner with MAGAs, then they will face the consequences. It’s not some arbitrary litmus test. It speaks volumes about priorities and values.

Currently, it's the voters facing the consequences, the deteriorating public schools for example. How can someone blame MAGA on this.

Do you really think most people are unhappy with the schools that their kids attend? No surveys actually support that view. I guess you're banking on everyone thinking their own kids' school is an exception

+1

MAGAs trying to hype up issues to push their agenda.

I voted for Obama, Clinton, and Biden. Have given thousands to Democratic candidates over the years.

Like our schools (the administrators and teachers) but am deeply worried about their futures, disgusted with the neglect, incompetence and hypocrisy of the current SB, and prepared to cross party lines this fall in local elections.

That is not MAGA speaking; that's a taxpayer and parent. And the more the FCDC party hacks - hideously nasty, self-serving creeps - try to paint us into a corner, the more likely we are to consider independent and GOP-endorsed candidates this fall.

I am the same as above PP, Democrats have been taking voters like us for guaranteed for far too long, this gonna come back to bite them. I am not voting for a D candidate for school board, I am done.

No one cares, Karen. We all know you are an R playing D on the internet.

DP. I do care - but I feel we are in the minority in this area - which is the truth. I'm hoping everyone else remembers the only reason our kids went back to school 5 days a week after over a year is because the VA legislature had to CHANGE THE LAW to require 5 days of school. The law in the state had to be changed before the FCPS school board would send our kids back full time. That is so just so crazy.

DH and I are both teachers. The problem is that the Rs in office, or those running for office, are trying to convince the electorate that the opposite is true to what I put in bold. They keep hammering it home and people believe it.

Confused as to why you think it matters at all whether a teacher is a Republican or Democrat, as that has zero to do with the question and teachers have ZERO influence on the curriculum, policy, law, etc. Nothing. The question was not about you and your answers are irrelevant. I'm a teacher and a democrat and my "views" have nothing to do with my teaching. Hard to believe you are actually "loving," though, since you take the time to vote for hateful politics like anti-gay and anti-immigrant policies.
