Do Local Republicans Want to Gut or Reform FCPS?

Anonymous
That’s my question. Disgusted with the local Democrats on the School Board - flakes like Meren, idiots like Frisch and Omeish, hypocrites like Tholen.

But I also support public schools. So my question is whether the local Republicans trying to get elected this fall want to gut and privatize public education (won’t support them) or instead reform FCPS and refocus on the basics (will support them).

Anyone with real insight is welcome to post. Screeds against, say, Glenn Youngkin or Randi Weingarten are not being solicited.

Well, Republicans may claim to be for education, but what you are going to get is book banning, don't say gay and the like. From my experience (I'm from Oklahoma), the R's defunded public education. (Oklahoma school teachers are some of the lowest-paid in the country.)

Republicans will always oppose and undermine public schools.

Always.

Bottom line is this: R’s want to lower taxes, which means funding for schools will be reduced. You can’t have it both ways. That, or they will make cuts everywhere else.

No. I’m a republican and I teach. I don’t indoctrinate and push my views on my students either. I just teach the curriculum and provide a warm, loving, nurturing environment for my title one students.

Republican policies, ding dong.

So how do the Democrats plan to improve them. Because the schools where we live have been on a decidedly negative trajectory.

I believe it.

DH and I are both teachers. The problem is that the Rs in office, or those running for office, are trying to convince the electorate that the opposite is true to what I put in bold. They keep hammering it home and people believe it.

The current board hasn't done a whole lot for my Mount Vernon pyramid either. But I have absolutely zero faith that a Republican from anotherndiatruct would lift a single finger to improve MVHS's situation. Their focus would be on further improving the status of their pyramid at all costs, whether it's Langley or McLean. Now an R from Mount Vernon would be a different story.

I am also a disillusioned Democrat but I can't in good conscience vote for a modern day Republican. At the local, state, or federal level. I know some Ds who are like oh I will continue to vote D on national elections but R on local ones. But local elections matter. I really wish SB were not endorsed by parties. And that independents stood a chance. I really hope moderate Democrats stand a chance in the SB elections.

All republicans want to gut and privatize all public schools. Any attempt to argue otherwise is a lie.

Absolutely not true. You are speaking from your own point of view.

Like if I wrote:
All Dems want to let kids read porn in school. They want all schools to teach that our society is systemically racist. They want to get rid of all standardized testing and leave parents totally out of decision making.

I grew up in public schools --through the Masters' Degree level. DH did the same, except for Masters was private.

We sent out kids to public schools and colleges.

I have always wanted my grandchildren to go to public schools, but I am beginning to rethink that.

When people think that 'Gender Queer" a graphic novel with sexual depictions is okay to have in SCHOOL libraries, something is wrong.

I am NOT for book banning. But, discretion in what is ordered for school libraries is just common sense. Book banning is keeping books from being published or sold. It is not keeping them out of school libraries.

Do local voters want to gut or reform FCPS?

The schools become good under republicans. Downhill slide became the situation when democrats became the majority. Not the board is totally D and we are in free fall. I will vote for Rs until because D vote- a vote to return the current board members to the board is a message that you like what they are doing. I don’t like what they are doing so it will be R for me.
