How far away do you need to be from DC to be safe from a nuclear attack?

We’ve booked it for 21 days… I guess if there’s an attack it won’t matter at that point and we’ll just stay there. There’s not much around it, and it’s miles and miles from anywhere that would seem even remotely important. Closest “city” is Roanoke, and that’s almost 45 miles away. That seems like the best we can do on short notice. We both WFH and are familiar enough with home schooling thanks to the pandemic that I think the kids will be ok for a while. They’re too young to really understand this, so as long as they’ve got stuff to keep them occupied I think they’ll manage ok….. I never believed we’d be in a mess like this a year ago. It’s just inconceivable. I just can’t even fathom it.

What was the deciding factor? I would like to leave for a bit as well and I’m trying to convince my spouse. We may leave out of the country if need be.

I just had a discussion with my cousin tonight about leaving the country and going where we have a second citizenship for a few weeks. We're on the fence.

On the plus side with all of the paranoids allegedly fleeing the area maybe we can start to shed more of the heightened covid restrictions and move more in line with the rest of the country

For real. Please stay wherever you flee too. Your panic is not needed here. I hope you don’t need to venture out of the house for anything. Covington is the complete opposite of DC. Report back how many masks you see. I’m going with zero.

The joke is the anti-mask crowd is the pro-prepper crowd too. They've been waiting for this.

+1,000,000

+a billion. They anti-mask/pro-prepper folks would also probably F up a post nuclear Holocaust society too by being super stupid.

It’s weird to me that you think this. Maybe you and I differ on who we would consider “anti-mask”. But I definitely would think the people literally fleeing DC right now (or at least claiming they are) are the same ones who think their perfectly healthy 6 year old might die if they go to school unmasked.

I think that’s the irony. They are the melodramatic ones whining for over 2 years about those awful masks and how their lives were ruined by the paranoid libs. And the poor children yada yada. Meanwhile they think nothing of fleeing a nuclear blast with Junior and Suzy in tow and what …starting over?

If only he had adopted his predecessor’s strategy with Putin: bending over and coquettishly spreading his ass cheeks.

Better that then the idiot we have now.

No, honey. The former idiot was 1,000 times worse.

Not in this situation but keep believing that!

I just…I just can’t get over this person thinking that the superior foreign policy is “bending over and coquettishly spreading your ass cheeks” 😂

So much for American exceptionalism.

Sounds like you saw the pee pee tape.

No. Probably too close to Malmstrom Air Force Base Montana.

Wrong direction. Radiation flows east. And Northern Idaho is directly east of Seattle/Spokane. Major navy and air force centers. First round hits. Coeur d'Alene is hot within minutes.

How are you getting to Spearman, TX in time to avoid a nuclear attack?

Seriously -- we'll have something like 4 minutes warning if Russia launches nukes. You won't even have enough time to get drunk.

I grew up here and we never bothered with those “duck and cover” drills in school. We knew we were toast if the Soviets launched against DC.

I grew up in DC and we did duck and cover drills routinely.

Yep. I actually don’t know what they need to hear. The Cdc literally said indoor masking is no longer recommended. They said that 2 days ago but Montgomery county doesn’t read the news, I guess. Everyone is still masking inside, except me.

Yep. The cdc just said that that we can take masks off indoors but they don’t seem to watch the news or read it here

DP, but I’m pretty sure the anti-mask crowd traffics in conspiracy theories and believe the worst case scenario is about to come true.

Btw, the masks (as has been said before) don’t protect the wearer but others. I have never understood the people saying those wearing masks are living in fear. No, they are living in basic courtesy.

Hi!! It’s crazy that you’re posting from April 2020, but I think you’ll be happy to know that almost 2 years later in 2022, everyone knows this is nonsense.
Exactly. The cdc just said masks aren’t necessary anymore, but nothing changed in Montgomery county yesterday.

+1. It was just a fact of life that you grew up with.

And made GenX chuckle morosely at all these loons who freaked out about Islamic terrorism — you had no idea what real fear and anxiety was.

If it’s a hydrogen bomb, everything inside the beltway is gone. If it’s a fission bomb, it will be bad for folks within a 10 mile radius.

But because Russia could not knock out Ukraine’s command center with its missiles, I have zero concern. Their equipment is garbage.

Global Thermonuclear War. "A curious game. The only winning move is not to play."

+1.

Nice. Might have to rewatch again with the kids this weekend.

Watch Jericho -- someone said on Netflix. Read Alas, Babylon.

+1; Love this time capsule back to the Cold War.

That is why they would send multiple war heads with the highest yield.

You clearly don’t understand anything about modern nuclear weapons. They are ALL hydrogen bombs (fission-fusion). The yield is highly variable (and adjustable) but they all use a two-stage process now. And DC wouldn’t be hit by one single large warhead, but by a dozen or more smaller or medium sized ones over the course of minutes to hours.

Different schools, I guess. I think the adults at our school realized the futility and skipped the drills in favor of more recess time.

If Russia uses nuke bombs on DC everyone in DC and most of the fashionable suburbs close to DC like Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Arlington, Alexandria, McLean, Potomac, Great Falls, Silver Spring, and Fairfax are all going to die. You'll either die instantly in the fireball, or your house will be smashed to pieces by the blast and then catch fire with you inside it, or you will die slowly of radiation poisoning amid the rubble of everything. If your kids are in school when it happens, they will die there and you will die alone without ever seeing them again. If it happens in the middle of the night and you live long enough you will watch them die in your arms after days or weeks of suffering before you die yourself. You will die, and your children will die, and they only thing that can possibly prevent that is getting away from DC now before it happens.
