I think you know the answer based on this tournament.

No. SYC was already the highest rated team in this age group. The only "challengers" in this age group were BRYC ECNL and ARL Red. The brackets were set so that SYC would only face one of them.

... The strange thing is SYC beat ECNL and GA teams but are ranked behind them. It just goes to show what a load of crap the ranking are.

I haven't looked at all of the teams that SYC has faced, but YSR has them ahead of two area ECNL teams (McLean and BRYC) and two area GA teams (Baltimore Celtic and Baltimore Armour). Just being in those two top-tier leagues doesn't mean you are instantly better than all others. You actually have to produce results in those leagues. As I said, SYC winning the final over BRYC probably says more about BRYC than it does about SYC ... at least at U13.

...

The only thing SYC did with this age group is they failed to take an opportunity to test themselves against more experienced teams (I don't know if any of the U14G teams are actually better). It was their tournament and I doubt anyone would have complained if their top team played up for one weekend at the end of the year. If this top team had won a final at U14, I think this would be an entirely different conversation.

I completely agree and we don't even know if this was BRYC top team, could have easily been second or third team. SYC won no other tournament all year this was as said before a meaningless tournament.

To be clear, SYC clapped the Sh$^ out of Arlington GA (now ECNL) very badly (Arlington dads and moms were losing their minds as their DDs were outplayed/outworked/outcoached/outsmarted - please check prior posts around ASIST) and BSC ECNL (got b$t$ handed back to them LOL). They beat BRYC ECNL (not a great team) but the best one available for a good ole fashioned ass whooping!!

DMV best teams in order without question:

VDA
SYC
BSC
Loudoun
Maryland United
FCV
Coppermine
Arlington GA/ECNL
VYS

It was their top team -- ECNL but remember BRYC is struggling globally on the girls side!

2008 BRYC ECNL team plays like it's 2006 before the possession game became popular.

Flat back four that stays flat on offense, two target strikers playing flat, they play with a diamond midfield but that takes 5 players out of the offense when they push forward.

They end up with 5 versus the entire other team and rely on the big girl target forwards to get the job done.

Ok, but their big target girls aren't getting it done... They are getting wrecked in ECNL week in and week out... It was discussed putting them in ECNL RL as it's embarrassing for the good clubs to play them ROFL
Anonymous
It think the 2008 coach is a former college coach and that is how he wanted to play - 2 target forwards.

I mean, what are you going to do. I'm not going to bash SYC for playing in, and winning, the top bracket in their age group that included 2 ECNL/GA teams, especially if it is the last tournament they play together before they break up (i.e. lose a bunch of players to MYS ECNL). Should they have put themselves in a bracket with either BRYC or Arl? Maybe. But based on the results, they were going to win those games easily anyway. You host the tourney, you get to stack your brackets.

college coaches play the same opponents every year, in closed leagues, against similar direct styles usually, play with a rigid style of play without much risk taking to keep their jobs, it shows.

Its very embarrassing that grown men and women are on here crying and critiquing 12 & 13yr old girls.

If you re-read, I think most people are critiquing the coach’s system of play and a team’s bracket placement and aren’t saying much of anything about the players.
