I think it is really unfair to kids at TJ and, to a lesser extent, kids at McLean, Langley, and others. But it is not yield protection. State schools don't do that - period. How do I know? For one thing common sense. There are many people, my own son included, who will choose UVA over an Ivy simply because of the cost. And second, because I have seen the Naviance at McLean and there is an upper corner that is a sea of green; as you go down or left there start to be wait-list diamonds; as you leep going down and left it starts to be a mix and so on. It is crazy but 4.45 probably isn't in the sea of green at TJ, it is in the mixed part. If you want to see what yield protection looks like, check out the Naviance for BU. |

I am curious if the supps will return next year? They are now widely used for kids to tell their story, which is how schools can legally achieve a diverse class. Because of the heat directed at UVA last year, scrapping them may have been a short term defensive strategy. It might not be a permanent choice by the AOs.

Take majority in ED TO rounds. Sounds right. |
| Why do schools do this? Why would anyone want this? Go back to having essays and make it worth someones time to apply and consider an applicant. |
| I remember having to have an interview for some schools. No essays is crazy. |

"In the 2025-2026 early action application cycle, Virginia residents saw a 22.8 percent acceptance rate while only 9.8 percent of out-of-state applicants were given offers".

My kid applied because of no supplementals. His counselor recommended he apply RD to show another semester of grades (he had a rough second semester freshman year ending with a C in History and B- in Latin) but has had straight As since. He only took two years of Latin in HS.
3.85 uw (private), 7 APs, 1550 SAT. In state. Applied to SEAS and was accepted. We are very surprised. |
| Some schools go overboard on the essays, but at a minimum a "why us?" essay seems like a good idea, if only to get a better sense of who is likely to actually accept the offer. |
| Is everyone forgetting what was happening when they yanked the essays? It was a top news story. |
| If you are using Naviance to figure out GPA remember that it shows final senior GPA not junior year. So you cannot go by those GPA numbers in Naviance for college admissions, not really. Senior year GPA is usually higher bc seniors are taking more weighted classes. So, a 4.45 is a great junior GPA that, barring senioritus, will bump even higher by graduation. |
This! |
It’s largely due to AI. I suspect the common app essay will be next. |
| Deferred EA, then waitlisted. Fcps (one of the less desirable schools). 4.5w/3.97uw 1450. SAT. 4 yr varsity athlete, great ecs with lots of leadership and awards. Volunteering, summer job, the works. English major |
| If its only by stats why did Uva ask to keep portal updated with achievements? |
Wow!!Thats sad |
