Our CCO told kids to write a separate personal statement for UVA that combined a personal statement in the traditional sense with something UVA specific (almost like a why school essay). Similar to what transfer students do.

So your supplemental essays made their way into the personal statement if that makes sense.

Kids who executed it well had great results.

Will start process next year. Is personal statement part of common app or are you saying sent in a separate letter to UvA outside common app? I thought they said would not/do not accept those?

UVA is one of the oldest schools in the country that has been a destination for out of state applicants for a long time.

Maryland has JHU. Virginia does not.

No? Plenty of other colleges manage to include supplemental essays that aren't identity-based or problematic in any way. UVA cutting out all their supplementals was just lazy and an obvious way to manipulate the admit rate. Very transparent.

The personal statement is the common app essay that is sent to every college.

For most people, it is the same essay everywhere. Some private college counseling firms have kids customize them.
