+1. It manages to be very old, pretty respected and yet fly under the radar. There aren’t even sports rivalries. There is zero appetite for messing with it.

We have rivalries with UR and UVA but both are pretty one sided in terms of wins

Does W&M play any D1 sports against UVA?

The real question is why have UVA, VCU, VT capitulated in advance of any formal legislation? Berkeley, UCLA, and UIUC haven't, to name a few publics.

Yes we play them in at least 1 sport a year. Usually football or baseball or soccer or field hockey.

You anti DEI people are the worst. Heaven forbid we live in a civil society where women, non-whites, and disabled people are treated with decency and dignity. You’re the middle school bullies and mean girls that never grew up.

Hmm. Interesting W&M parent and did not know. At any rate, that’s still not a sports rivalry in the way people love/hate Duke or UNC because basketball. That’s just ritual humiliation for W&M, which I imagine they accept with a decent attitude.

No it’s not. It’s a public state university.

And yet, it’s definitely LAC adjacent. It’s a unicorn— very unique for public university.

It’s really not. I understand that you believe this, but it is not “LAC adjacent.”

“Capitulated”? They have common sense.

That’s exactly what being against “DEI” is about. It means treating *everyone* equally and fairly, with dignity and decency. Not just certain people.

You seem very confused.

I look at the size, undergrad focus, small class size, required curriculum and see SLAC adjacent. Also, one kid went to a SLAc and the other went to W&M, and they have had very similar experiences, academically, socially and culturally.

I’ve shown you mine. Now show me yours. Why is not SLAC adjacent?

Yeah our we hate them rival would be the University of Richmond "Ticks". There's a booth at the monthly street fair that sells F Richmond shirts.

It is much bigger than a typical SLAC. Mary Washington is SLAC-adjacent. SMCM. Possibly Christopher Newport.

I went there and DD is considering it. Yes it is a lot bigger. Lehigh is that size too though and it is acknowledged as a LAC. W&M has a lot more features that make it similar in feel to a LAC than to a big national university like UVA and Tech.

W&M is not SLAC adjacent.
It is twice the size and sometimes almost triple the size of every SLAC. No skin in the game but double the size of Richmond for example.
SLACs have generally 3,000 undergrads, and usually closer to 2,000.
W&M is a sweet spot school for many - over 7,000 undergrads.
