Coaching Changes

Assuming your talking about the OC at Bullis, the HC at SSSA, HC at Dematha and the HC at St Mary's, as the main ones that are out there so far. Lots of other rumors about some of the other WCAC and IAC potentially making changes too. Sticking with those 4 for right now, it probably depends on where you are in life and where you live. Maryland side of DC, Dematha and St Mary's are probably more your targets. VA side Bullis and SSSA. Want to show immediate growth and changes in the program, SSSA probably has more immediate possibilities. Bullis is hard in that you're waiting on someone to leave and post-25 class is ugly for them. Dematha is just a tough sell. St Mary's is competing with Spalding and the MIAA. Again, its really gonna depend on can you build a program or do you want to inherit a program.

Are people counting the Bullis OC job as an opening? The HC jobs at DeMatha, SSSA, and St. Mary's probably all have some flexibility with full time positions at the schools with them. Not sure the same goes for Bullis OC unless Bellistri is trying to get a HC in waiting.

As other poster said, all the HC jobs come with question marks:
1) SSSA: Can they keep or rebuild connection with Alexandria youth? Will the new coach be able to get a bunch of kids in for his second year?
2) DeMatha: Can they keep local talent from heading around the beltway? Are they serious about competing with Gonzaga, SJC, and the seemingly rising GC?
3) St. Mary's: Does any coach in the DMV have the connections to recruit in Annapolis? Is Spalding locking down all the private school talent there now?

For all of them: what are they offering for compensation and staff support? It needs to make financial sense and have some room to build a staff, not just be a higher profile job for a good coach to move.

Local coaches who might be interested:

Ince (OC at SJC) has already been mentioned and is an obvious candidate. Well dialed into the club scene and an effective recruiter, had success at SJC, pedigree having played at UVA.

Tucker at St. James has turned that team into a much better program in a hurry with boarders but may not have the DMV recruiting connections and is older.

Mitchell at The Heights could follow big brother in making a jump to a higher profile program.

Kubick (OC at Landon) has come back to his old form after returning to high school coaching with the Bears a few years ago. Has coached great offenses at Prep and Landon, might want to do something different than work at Mater Dei and be an assistant.

He’s been the head coach since 2017 and won 3 state championships.

A teacher cannot coach if they want to be promoted to a high level administrator position so word on the street is the SSSAS boys lax coach is taking on a top administrative position. Hopefully SSSAS does the impact move and hires a well connected club coach with experience that can elevate the program, increase depth/talent and attract some high academic student athletes.

What head coaches of top hs teams have been owners of clubs? I'm sure there are some but it's not obvious. Landon, GZ, GP, Bullis, SJC. It doesn't seem to be long term successful.

Nick McEvoy at GZ could be in line for something at the next level. Great career at GZ and PSU, coaches club and was an integral part of GZ’s coaching staff.

If I lived in the Annapolis area, Saint Mary's would be a very attractive HC job if the role comes with a full time position with in the school.

The Saints have a long history of success of having played in the MIAA, have won MIAA banners, and their alumni base cares immensely about the lacrosse program.

None of those schools have had a club owner on staff. They've all had connections to various clubs/years because of assistants coaching club or parents in the school:

DC Dogs (ML 2023) to Gonzaga and Prep
DCE (several years) to Bullis
ML 2024 to Landon
NL (several years) to SJC

All the schools have players on the roster from multiple club programs and try to keep up connections for recruiting purposes.

I really don't think club programs are affiliated with HS programs the way they used to be right before COIVD hit.

Our son plays for NL but is coached by an assistant from SJC, alums from GZ and HC from the Heights.

Looking at our son's roster, there are kids from various schools on the team from GP, Landon, GZ, SJC, Bullis and a few publics.

I think the sport is too big now for a club owner to be fully affiliated with a private. Its a risk to their business model as well.

HS coaches having to rely on the club scene is getting so lame. Making hires based on who is affiliated with what club. God this is dumb. But yeah, we’re here.

Do we care about the publics yet’cause that’s where the rumors are brewing. 😳

What does that mean?

This year definitely seemed to be an outlier in terms of their sloppier play. Posters have mentioned that SSSA may suffer from the decline of Alexandria youth lacrosse and connections there.

Hopefully SSSA can remain relevant in the IAC as they have since Taibl started there.

SSSA had good teams due to leftovers from Taibl and his assistant coaches that were affiliated with Blackwolf and MadLax. But last two years without the carryovers and those assistants, Dodds had no one to really coach there. Its why we were able to beat SSSA 2 out of 3 times at Episcopal. Superior coaching.

It means for people that don’t care about the private schools and whose kids go to the publics, should they participate in this thread with the rumors being tossed about or is this a star bellied sneetch only thread?
