They need to keep the show going and she's fertile.

exactly. wasn't it fred and a couple others who created the whole handmaid/ceremony thing? yet they're lower rank?

I don't think Fred is as important as we've been led to believe. Both Commander McKenzie and Commander Half-arm (Naomi's husband) have much bigger houses. It also makes sense that in a new country that you're barely holding together you would spread out your leadership.

The latest episode was pretty boring, IMO. The one exception was the scene where Mrs. Commander Stabler takes Serena into a house that hasn't been restored. I was a little sick to my stomach to see all the kid's stuff, the half-drunk glasses of wine on the table, the baby's nursery with her name on the wall. Reminiscent of the Boston Globe, but still chilling and sad. And the flippant way the Commanders wife said, "I think they were Baptists." Which was weird.

It seems they are also setting up a wives version of Jezebel's, which, groan.

I like the Canada stuff, but I really wish they'd be more specific in what exactly is going on. There's just a lot that doesn't make sense there.

God didn't make Gillead, the Son's of Jacob did. I kinda feel like June must know that she's far more in favor with God than any commander, eye or guardian.

June still prays. I don't think she sees anything Christian or Godly in Gilead.

I’m a practicing Catholic. I see nothing Christian or Godly in Gilead. I don’t see anything Christian or Godly in Trump’s treatment of migrants or a state prosecuting a woman who miscarries. I don’t blame God that these policies exist by the hand of a few people who claim to do his bidding. I try to fight against these injustices and my faith strengthens me in that work.

Its not about Christianity its about control and its easiest to control via religion and justify it via the bible.

This line didn't make much sense to me, either. Baptists would have been more likely to create or go along with Gilead than almost any other Protestants. It's such a small but glaring detail to get wrong. The scene overall was pretty chilling, though, especially seeing that dusty copy of The Washington Post on the table. That was a detail that really worked, as it brought back the two most horrific episodes of the series.

I almost wondered if that stroll through the house was going to give Serena second thoughts about back all in on Gilead. The look on her face made me think she might still have a conscience in there, somewhere.

I'm willing to suspend disbelief a lot for the sake of a good drama, but this issue is really tough for me, too. June is the obvious culprit in the "kidnapping" of Nichole to Canada, and it's clear Gilead has made the connection between June, the MacEnzie's Martha, Hannah, and the school visit. Why is she not hanging?

Would have made more sense if she said “They we’re Jews or Muslims”

Serena was involved in getting Nichole out, so it is in her interest to keep the full truth under wraps.

Plus, isn’t handmaid punishment largely up to the Aunts? They had June help kill the Martha responsible for the leaked school info., which I’m sure Aunt Lydia knows is a terrible punishment for June, while still keeping her available as a “ripe” handmaid.

I think it shows how a fringe group with a narrow definition of acceptable religious beliefs could potentially come to power and threaten even the fundamentalists who think they have the Christian moral high ground.

Or atheists, especially. Atheists seem more incompatible with Gilead than very conservative Jews or Muslims, who share similar gender roles with very conservative Christians.

I don’t really get where they’re going and I agree that it’s all getting excessively implausible. The mouth rings make no sense logistically. It makes no sense that even two high ranking women would be allowed to play real estate agent in an abandoned house. June should be dead x25. Also, it’s possible that she’d already told them but Emily yelling about how June gave her the baby in the street is just reason 26 why June should be hanging for any of this to make sense.

Good point.

Yes, I don’t think we’d see many Baptists, even Southern Baptists, agreeing to Handmaids and state sanctioned adultery.

My thought is that Boston is sort of the border or frontier. That’s usually not where you find the highest ranking officers and politicians.

Also, I think Serena Joy was never the ideal Commander’s wife precisely because she had been so active in providing ideas and making decisions. Put a smart and influential woman like that in the Capital where she has a bigger audience or stick her in a backwater?

I get the sense that Serena and Fred (especially Serena) were big idea people during the formation of Gilead, but of course Serena voluntarily gave up any power she had and Fred seems pretty easily cowed, so probably didn’t attempt to nab a super powerful position.

I would love to see a follow up series, even if it’s just one season, that shows the rise of Gilead.
