Did I hear this right?

I don’t even know it’s legal. Basically it’s like a charter school for two years but open for only certain area.

That's not what she said at all. This PP is either really bad with comprehension and completely misunderstands what Reid said or deliberately trying to mislead you.

I can concur this was my interpretation as well. She kept referring to it as an "Opt-in" for the first few years until the "hard" boundaries went into effect with 4 full classes.

+1. I have a current 4th grader zoned to Chantilly, and some quick math in my head means the school won't have full capacity relief until he is in 11th grade. Which by that time, we will supposedly be doing another boundary review.

If it werre up to me, they should only give rising 10th graders and kids with older siblings in 10th/11th/12th a choice to stay. Doing this as a soft launch means it takes much longer to get enrollment up for various clubs/sports, and also sounds like a logistical nightmare, especially if transportation is provided.

If you move them to Western, then they will make Western great!!

And drop scores at Oakton? I mean I guess that makes it more equitable by kneecapping Oakton and pumping up Western.

She was ridiculous talking about home values too. As if that’s a convincing argument. She went on way too long and whatever she was trying to say about transportation at the end didn’t even make sense. She basically said some part of the Crossfield area is pretty far from Oakton… uh yeah that’s why there was a proposal to move them. Maybe she was trying to throw some streets under the bus saying her street should stay at Oakton but some other should be moved lol

Is this same Oakton mom as at last meeting?

Dunno but 5 people spoke out saying they don't want to leave cross field with lots of cheering.

I was thankful for the man who stood up and said some crossfield want to go to western. That took guts in that room and he had lots of (quiet) support from families like me hoping to go to a school closer. I also found it offensive when the woman said crossfield made Oakton great. Why couldn’t we be excellent at the new school!?!

Anonymous wrote:So what are they going to propose on Saturday?

These are tweaks that I can think of that they may make to the Drafty Draft Options:

Option A: Move the small pocket of Floris from SLHS to KAA

pros: Floris won't be split feeder, SLHS will get some relief.
cons: Fox Mill will be the only school going to SLHS from Carson

Option B: Move Franklin Farm west of 286 from Oakton to KAA

pros: Oakton will get some relief. Will satisfy most Crossfield parents which appear to be very torn.
cons: Crossfield will become three way split

Option C&D: Move Fox Mill Woods from KAA to SLHS

pros: Will satisfy Fox Mill Woods parents. KAA will be close to 2000.

Or are they coming up with a completely new map?

There's nothing west of 286 that goes to Crossfield. "Most" Crossfield parents don't want to stay at Oakton. I would say most Crossfield parents are ambivalent or hoping to move to the new school. It's just some loud ones that want to move.

That's not the experience in my neighborhood. Most paid serious coin for access to Oakton, though there is a small minority who wanted south lakes access due to the south asian community there.

Oh please, I have what is now a $1.5M house that I paid $750K for. That's not "serious bank".

My house is worth more than that at 1.9 million, but yes your house is approximately 4x the median price for the USA and 2x the average Fairfax house price. Your house qualifies as serious bank.

You reek of privledge.

Says the person who says they "paid serious coin for access to Oakton"
LOL!

Yes, I am fortunate enough to be able to afford a house that is roughly 5x the median national average and close to 3x the fairfax average. I recognize that I paid a ton of cash for access to oakton and that I am privledged to do so. To be able to afford a nearly 10k a month mortage is limited to very few people.

If you don't recognize you're in the same group of people I don't know what to say.

If you're paying nearly $10K/month for a house in this area, you did something very, very wrong!

No kidding. Also weird that someone with that much money can’t spell a word a simple as privilege.

English is my third language.

Posting my thoughts from the meeting before reading others thoughts. I moved into the breakout room for questions virtually

1) They have a Principal, it is the man who opened Westfield.
2) It sounds like there are a lot of teachers interested in teaching at the new school.
3) the boundaries will not be decided until June.
4) Some very vocal Oakton parents really do not want to move. There were a lot of “Oakton isn’t at capacity, don’t make us move”
5) The school will be fully opt in for the first two years.
6) Sports will start as not paprt of the Virginia Sports league that all FCPS schools are a part of, students can choose to try out for their old base schools team if they want.
7) There will be sports but they are going to take time to grow and evolve, they know that.
8) Same for theatre and music and the like.
9) They will have all of the normal classes that Freshmen and Sophomores take
10) Oakton families really don’t want to move, at least the ones that were talking at this meeting.

Can you elaborate on this? Is she saying that KAA students can try out for their base school team whilst attending KAA? Or that you can elect to stay at your base school if you want to be part of the VSL?

Thank you. The principal who opened Westfield did a great job. He understood the needs. He also opened South County and was a well respected principal at Chantilly prior to opening Westfield.
I'm a little surprised he is willing to do this. Are you sure it is the same one?

They need to set the boundaries before June. Especially, if they continue with the Comprehensive Boundary Review.

and, they need to have coaches for sports when they open-and have freshman/JV at least.

I don't know how 70 kids a year changes anything at Oakton.

As a Crossfield parent, those Oakton families don't represent us. They have older kids or are Navy parents who aren't even impacted.

Anyway, I was at the meeting and the Oakton families are going to have their way. Reid will only listen to the people directly in front of her, and most of us were too scared of the repercussions to speak up. If you know who one of the leaders of this group is, you know why.

South County opened as a secondary school. 2005-2006 it had grades 7-11. There is no reason this school cannot open for 2026-27 with grades 9-10. Optional grade 11.

You can check membership by grade level on the VDOE site. Instead Reid is running the thing like a charter or Magnet school.

Appalling .
