Which songs are your favorite? There’s none that I’ve really caught me as on. Repeat type songs yet. But maybe I need to give it another try. I really don’t like the Miley song. As much as other people raved about it but I kind of like the daughter song.

NP

I love Texas hold em, just for fun and II most wanted.

I love the lyrics in American requiem and she turns a phrase which is a country music feature.

I like ii hands, Levi jeans

I prefer the jolene lyrics Beyoncé sings.

Country music is country music! And it doesn't come from wannabees. Just because you carry a lot of $ and your name is known DOES NOT mean you step across to my side of the sidewalk! Yuck!!!!

Dolly seems to like her just fine. Of course she's not Dolly Parton! She's her own person!

I quite liked the album actually and it was kind of definitely NOT a country album although a lot of country influences. The Miley song is great.

I just listened to Beyonce's version of "Jolene" and I don't like it. The lyrics are reworked to be empowering or threatening or something. Beyonce might've produced the best version of the song ever (and this song has been covered extensively) if she kept the lyrics as originally written. Whitney Houston covered "I Will Always Love You" and turned a beautiful song into a masterpiece. Beyonce missed an opportunity, imo.

It was so cringe and embarrassing. I'd kill my husband if he wrote a song about me cheating on him.

I mean the original song is about begging a woman not to come steal your husband so its not exactly a non cringe moment in any of its iterations

The song has the catchiest hook ever. You can't help but sing along. "Jolene" is way better than "Stand By Your Man". Beyonce did an entire album (Lemonade) about getting cheated on, so it's a bit weird to rework Jolene. Dolly's Jolene is like a woman to woman talk; whereas Beyonce's version lookss like some loser girl is doing a territorial pissing around her guy who no one really wants except for his money.

Which clearly happens all.the.time.

Beyonce is terrible. She sounds like she has a stuffed up nose ALL THE TIME. I saw a brief news clip on this new album this morning. Looks like she's just doing covers of other's songs.

Back off Dolly and Jolene! Beyonce cannot compete with Queen Dolly!

She and hubs are somehow involved with this whole Diddy mess. Mark. my. words.

I love her cover of Blackbird. It’s beautiful.

The other singer sounded better. I wish she sang the whole thing, I don’t like Beyonces timbre

I love her version! It’s warmer and more joyful and hopeful. McCartney’s version us one of my favorites if all time, but it’s more meloncholy

It’s a great album. It’s drawing from multiple American music genre, with heavy borrowing from country and she rocks all of the songs. I’m not a huge Beyoncé fan, and I am a huge fan of Dolly and older country and this is great.

Dolly Parton does not share your feelings since she’s on the album, along with Miley Cyrus and Willie Nelson.

It is a fun album.

My repeats are 16 carriages ( I relate so much to this song) and protector made me cry as I’m a single mom to a son. We just finished our first annual mommy/son trip. He is 8 going “on I don’t need you”. Jolene was proper too- I enjoyed it. Those are my favorites.

Protector is beautiful and so is My Rose. It’s rumored My Rose is about Beyonces son Sir . There are rumors about why they hide him but that song is a nice tribute to him if rumor is true

Her cover of Blackbird is beautiful.

Interesting discussion. My opinion is that Jay Z and Kanye are both trash for their behavior on the Grammys. Beyonce has won more Grammys than anyone, and you have to act out in a way that puts other artists down?

But I really DO love this ambitious new album. 32 awards in, I think Beyonce will deserve album of the year next time around and I hope she gets it. Her spin on Jolene is awesome, and even Paul McCartney would probably prefer her version of Blackbird to his given his motivation in writing it. Texas Hold 'Em is just fun. If the album doesn't climb the charts as fast as it should, it may in part be because of the oversexualized videos that don't appeal to country audiences which are more conservative. Taylor Swift just isn't as naked and her lyrics are pretty tame, so they can't justify keeping their 13 year olds from worshipping her.

As for the origins of country music, I believe that they owe more to Appalachian (mostly Scoth-Irish) bluegrass than African banjos, but African Americans have definitely shaped the genre and their contributions should be more widely acknowledged and celebrated.

I wish we could all get over this "cultural appropriation" stuff inflicted by DEI practitioners. This melding and evolution of art, music, language, fashion is the history of the world and there's not a damn you can or should do to keep cultures separate or claimed by any one group. I remember being ready to be all outraged after finding out that Angel of the Morning (which I heard by Juice Newton all the time on the radio during my Texas upbringing) had actually been recorded by the legend PP Arnold in the 1960s. That white country singer stole a song from PP and profited from it! Then I found out it was actually written by Jon Voigt's brother, so there went that. But I still love PP's version so much more.

American Requiem, Blackbird, 16 carriages, protector, my rose are beautiful.

I didn’t know Beyonces grandad was a moonshine man . Now that’s country lol. I almost forget Prohibition exists until someone mentions moonshine.

Do people still make/ drink moonshine in the South? It’s one of those things like dry counties/towns that I’m surprised still exist
