Who are all these people posting that they pull in a million a year but only have net worths of
7 million? Y’all are doing something way wrong. |
| We blend in appropriately for our neighborhood, which is not a flashy neighborhood. |
Well they might have just jumped from $500/600 to the $1M with a new job. But most likely it's because they are spending way more than saving. Which is silly in 99% of the cases, as they have the tools to be well set for life, while living an amazing life, and once they have saved enough they can start spending more (and stop saving). |
| No one knows we travel on NetJets. |
| My perspective on this changed when my adult child said some new friends called him “rich kid” because he has airline miles. I think a lot of posters who think they hide it just don’t realize how others see some things that are normal and not “flaunty” to you. |
I think most people are a mix. My family is from the Midwest and never talks money so modesty is second nature. But my husband retired young and I have a nice car so even though we don’t take a lot of expensive vacations or move up in our housing every few years we do send some wealth signals |

We have a NW around $10M and our college-age kids have NWs in the $500,000 range. I don't think anyone has a clue. I am very generous with my nieces and nephews, taking them to concerts and giving cash gifts with no strings. I hope they just see me as a generous person. My brother said once in front of his kids that could have chosen to have more kids, but "decided to be rich instead," so I think he has some idea.
I see no point in flaunting my wealth, however, the older I get the more I realize that wealth is a way to insulate yourself. I don't care much about free alcohol or a larger seat in first class, but it's nice that it's quieter and more civilized. We now try to use our money to enjoy our life more rather than go for the bare minimum. |
This is (almost) us. Income has only been $900K for a few years. Until ten years ago combined income was below $300K. We still live in a small house (under 2000 square feet), kids in public schools and two cheap cars we bought used one of which is more than ten years old. We save a lot now (including entire $300K bonus) but our incomes only recently went up this much. I don’t think our friends have any idea. |
