Trump is blocking a border deal in the Senate

I think Jesus would be cool making little kids drown in a river tangled up in razor wire on account of states rights. Christ Jesus was a big federalist.

These are perilous trips whether there is razor wire or not. The right thing to do is disincentivize families from taking the trip.

Right now, cartels are taking infants and toddlers and dumping them on the side of the road so that CBP has to respond to the abandoned baby and the cartels can get through as "getaways." This is okay with you?

Now, do what the Bible says about following laws. And, consider that these people breaking our laws and entering illegally are not following scripture.

Yeah that’s great and all but you guys have never been able to grasp that claiming asylum is following the law.

Oh and Matthew 25:45-46.

And, when they lie as they claim asylum, they are breaking another law.

Ok good luck explaining to your maker someday how you cherry picked scripture to suit your racist agenda.

You realize that migrants are coming from all over the world. They are not all "brown," as you like to claim.
We have no problem with immigrants who come here legally and want to be part of our country.
I have huge issues with those whose FIRST action when coming to this country is to break our laws by entering illegally.
Get over your race baiting and face reality.

DP. Oh, I think lots of people do have a problem with even legal immigrants, particularly when they change the socio-economic/ethnic/racial makeup of local schools and neighborhoods, appear to be taking jobs away from US-born Americans (e.g., Indians with tech backgrounds on Hb1 visas), or don't enthusiastically show they "want to be a part of our country" by not assimilating in the way that native-born Americans would like.

Serious question. Let's say all the people who have an issue with border control are racist. I mean that hypothetically. Do you feel we should continue with our current policy of mass undocumented immigration to spite them? Or do you sincerely believe our current border policies are optimized for America's best interests?

Serious question. Why does the border issue consistently ramp up in intensity in the lead-up to presidential elections? Serious question. If the border is such a big emergency, why is the GOP-majority House trying to scuttle the bipartisan efforts of the Senate to address the problem? Serious question. Why does the GOP take its marching orders from an ex-president? (Even the conservative WSJ editorial board has called Trump out for meddling in the legislative process.)

Exactly this. For several years we’ve been treated to how there is nothing, no problem anywhere in the world that is as serious as the border problem and they… some of them are planning on tanking it so that the Democrats might not look more responsible? Way to advertise, Republicans, that you don’t really care about the issue.

He wants Ukraine funding. He couldn't care less about a border deal. The evidence of that is that past 3 years.
He could have stopped the flow at the border in a number of ways - all currently part of our law. He also could have taken executive action.
He did nothing to secure the border.

The GOP is unserious about immigration and every word of your post proves it.

What I think is that "open border" is a trigger term used to rile up the right (works like a charm every time) and that deep down the border panic is caused by fear of the other. I also think that the current border situation is less than ideal and has been less than ideal for decades under different administrations. Further, I think that the solutions to the problem will have to be bipartisan, will have to involve significant legislative change, will require more than what one individual president can accomplish, and will not be quick or easy.

This is actually encouraging. To hear some acknowledgment that we should do something about the border. It seems most of the discussion isn't productive because people on the right present their concerns and then people on the left call them racist. I'm fine if you guys want to keep calling us racist as long as we can take some action toward better security.

US law has no basis in the Bible, however it does routinely expose self proclaimed Christian conservatives to be hypocrites who go against the teachings of Christ.

Jesus never talked about border control and he also didn't expect people to be total doormats.

You want to keep doing this? You think the guy who advocated turning the other cheek wanted cruelty to those with no power. Good. god.

By all means change the laws. It’s unfortunate that it was US policy that did so much to destroy those countries but ffs stop tarting yourselves as Christians. You aren’t.

1) I think you fundamentally misunderstand Christianity. Jesus wasn't a pacifist pushover who thought nations didn't exist, governments and laws shouldn't be acknowledged, etc. While he brought the message of God's love, he also made clear that we have a vengeful God who will cast evil people to literally burn in hell for eternity. That seems to put a significant caveat on the "turn the other cheek" message, don't you think?

2) enforcement of borders isn't cruel. You and I have to submit to security screening to simply board a plane, but it's okay for noncitizens to stream in through the border? I'm stopped at customs. Is that cruelty, to hold everyone to the same standards? My foreign relatives have to adhere to the restrictions of their visas. But if they come through the southern border, it doesn't apply? I'm trying to understand why I have to deal with "cruelty" at the airport every time I travel, but we can't require noncitizens who are in the process of violating our laws to deal with this "cruelty".

Jesus VERY CLEARLY taught that we, as a people, should give refuge to those who need it. That we should feed and clothe the needy. That we should tend to the sick and the elderly. And that is attested to repeatedly via the four direct testimonials given in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which are the core teachings of Christ in the New Testament. That is absolutely undeniable, and is not to be overridden by the Old Testament, nor what someone other than Jesus said.

If you don't understand that then you are the one who fundamentally misunderstands Christianity.

Attempting to suggest Christianity requires open borders is absurd. The rule of law matters.

I'm a Dem and the PP you're responding to, and I'm right there with you about the need to take some action toward better border security. But I fear that it's going to be very hard to get anything done with both sides being so entrenched in their positions. The last meaningful reform of our immigration system was in 1986 under Ronald Reagan. That's not to say that both both sides of the aisle haven't made attempts to reform immigration laws since then, but they haven't been able to pull it off. We're probably even more divided as a nation now than we were in 1986, so I'm not holding my breath that anything can be done. I also don't think there is a "perfect" immigration bill that we should all wait for as DJT has suggested (for obvious self-serving reasons). Change is going to come in stages and not everyone is going to be happy about the details.

We are not dumb.
If the details that have been released are correct, why in the hell is it ok to normalize 5000 illegal entries A DAY? This is pure insanity.
Nobody needs to tell me that this is not a good deal. Even Jeh Johnson said that 1,000 entries a day constitutes a crisis.
