But it’s not the kid’s “own language.” The kid’s own language is English because he’s American. His nationality is also American.

As an Asian person who grew up here in my 5th decade, I dont take it as micro-aggresion when someone says something to me in Mandarin.
I have had Chinese people stop me on the street and subway asking for directions in Mandarin.
And I answer them and help them out in Mandarin because I know how to speak it and know my heritage. Both my Wasian kids know a smattering of Mandarin too.

I get the sense OP doesn't know her heritage language and neither does her kid.
