| I love being a white man. |
Did you not get enough attention the first time you posted this? Must not be that great after all. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/30/1176732.page |
And if this happened to them, it would wound them to their core, but we are just expected to take it because we are overreacting. |
But the PP just pointed out that 4/5 of the “American” kids on her street speak a second language. I grew up speaking a second language. My son speaks DH’s native language. I don’t know that many people who aren’t at least bilingual. And I don’t think I know a person over the age of 5 who doesn’t know what xiexie means. You might be from a less educated, cosmopolitan area, which I’m not criticizing. It might make this all difficult for you to understand this, though. You also seem to think that being considered anything other than “American” is a slight. It’s not, where I come from. |
| Whoowee, it must be exhausting to constantly think of how you’re a target of “microaggressions.” Can’t wait for the pendulum to swing back to as it was before all this crap. |
16 pages later... DCUM says no I didn't know Hawaii was well known from being Anglicized and exclusionary against Chinese language speakers. |
| Imagine being this proud of being an ignorant American who forgot your heritage and only speaks one language. |
Its not hatred (except against toy car culture) or problematic ignorance to use a word with its common meaning without studying its entire etymology. |
Why would you love it? Everyone blames you for everything. Everything is your fault. Everything is your responsibility. Whenever anything needs to be done, everyone expects YOU to do it, then complains about every part of it, all while making use of whatever solution you came up with. You’re hated just because you exist. You will never redeem yourself in the eyes of many of these people who hate you no matter what you do. Why on earth would anyone want to be a white male? |
I know, right???
Shows you how much some people have assimilated. |
People did reflect, and some of them disagreed with you. Disagreeing with you doesn’t make us racist. Also, I’m not white, and if you read this thread not everyone else who saw things differently was white. Having people disagree with you can also be an opportunity to reflect — on your own psychology. Micro aggressions are real. We suffer because of them. But we can become so overprotective of ourselves that we aren’t living our lives, aren’t raising our kids to be strong, aren’t being fair to those around us…the list goes on. |
Agree. And now is the optimal time for some serious self-reflection by many in the US. |
I think you missed the point of the post. Her child is American and speaks English. |
| Definitely move to Hawaii, you're annoying. |
| Just a thought, OP: Maybe the neighbor recently came from China (work, vacation, whatever) and is in the habit of saying thank you in Chinese. I lived in the Middle East for 5 years and even now (ten years later) I still say “Shukran” out of habit. I am white and the people I say it to are random. This area is full of foreign service officers. |
