2024 US News rankings

I agree with much of the 3:14 post, but I ignore the California schools. I lived in California for several years, & have concluded it’s like NYC—it’s so different that the normal rules and standards don’t apply to them. So who cares where UC Irvine is? I’ve known more people who have gone to Colby & Williams than Irvine.

Also, Wake seemed to be on thin ice with its recent high rankings. They have a solid reputation & distinct identity, but if they don’t catch Duke, does it really matter if they are 25 or 45?

It’s good news for lots of people that Rutgers jumped up. Now maybe more NJ people will go there instead of every other college in the country. Their football team is doing better too. Good for them. It’s time something went right for that university.

It will as the swell to get of legacy admissions continues.

LOL just like every other elite top 20. It's not going anywhere below where it is. It hasn't for decades. I know that triggers you lol.

Uh no. Many of them like UVA have already dropped it. And while we are on the topic of Notre Dame let’s discuss it’s abysmal 3.3% black student population (and don’t try comparing it to the UV schools -we stomped you on that last time)

Like I said, despite its lackluster diversity, it still remains a top 20 school. They must be doing something right! And it has been in top 20 since the 90s, but nice try.

Shameful diversity statistics. I notice you didn’t address that. How do justify that? And legacy? Within a Christian mission?

It’s a Catholic school. Therefore Catholics will be the majority. That’s your lack of diversity. The key issue here is that did little to hurt ND’s ranking like everyone predicted. They lost a couple of slots due to alumni giving and class size being eliminated as metrics. And maybe diversity also. But down only 2 is remarkable and attributed to its strong reputation as an academic (and athletic by the way) powerhouse.

I think your ideas are outdated a bit? I visited Duke with my daughter this year and it was clearly a vibrant and diverse community, as many of the elite schools we visited were. Also Duke said they enrolled 17% Pell grant recipients this year, which is definitely not the lowest %.

I've always thought some schools like Tulane and Northeastern to be overhyped and overpriced. My best friend's daughter goes to Case Western and all her into classes have a few hundred people in them. At that point. why go there over William & Mary, VT, or Maryland? I do wonder if some privates will have trouble with their yield now. And some of the drops are wild - most Washington University and Tufts grads I know are the kind of people to care about rankings so I'm sure the drop will be hard for them.

When all the privates drop in sync, it has very little meaning. People will just take US News less seriously, which is a good thing.

LOL nice try. What it means is the private schools that drop off the cliff were relying to heavily on certain metrics. Any private that can keep its spot or rise as a result of the changes are the ones that should impress. Yes, this list does show which schools were heavily over rated. Good for USN for culling that out.

I am the ND booster who noted that it stayed within top 20 (18-20) despite the changes. Everyone thought lack of diversity would severely impact it's standing. I suspect they maintained top 20 due to their generous financial aid, increasing Pell grants, efforts to increase diversity, and the fact that those who do get admitted graduate on time despite ethnic/socioeconomic background. It's a great institution and I am glad this is recognized. Plus their football team is killing it this year

As it should have. Never made any sense that that school was ranked where it was. Was gaming the system before I guess.

Notre Dame has a massive endowment too, but their ranking doesn’t reflect that.

Only changes in top 10: Brown moved in, UChicago plummeted out. Other than that, usual suspects at the top: HPSM, Yale, Penn, Caltech, Duke. Only change I would make is finding a way to move Columbia up into the T10.

Excellent point. However, there are other factors used to rate schools & ND's religious affiliation likely limits how high it will rank.

Some people view Catholic Church as a criminal organization.

What really matters are the graduation rates of Pelll Grant recipients. Maybe that matters to you. But for most families, it's not something they're looking at when determining the quality of a university.

So a large state like California with a lot of income disparity in their public colleges is going to do great in these measurements..All the UCs - with the exception of Merced - are now top 35 schools. UC Irvine is ranked higher than NYU and Tufts. Rutgers is a top 40 school now. And Wake Forest drops nearly 20 spots to 47.

USNews is no longer measuring the academic quality of schools, but their perceived "social good." It such be read as such.

Yes, so much hand wringing and mud slinging. 11% of a school's ranking this year is based on Pell and First-gen statistics. While that may be important to some, it may not be to many in the DCUM crowd here. Also, if you think that class size is important, well, that has 0% bearing this year. If you feel that alumni giving (loyalty to a school) is important, that also has zero bearing. So it all depends on what you think is important when you look for a college. Academically, I doubt that the top 30 schools differ in any significant way.
