School board - who to vote for

This is really good for the school system with all his conflict of interest, he shouldn't be on the board at all. He was appointed by the incompetent board members.

I hope they all lose this time and we get a fresh leadership who will make the changes necessary to improve academics for all students and not spend dollars on PR firms

Instead of bridging the achievement gap at all levels MCPS has just been dismantling the magnet programs. As if having some more URM students in a very small magnet program will automagically make up for piss poor performance of URM students across MCPS who are dealing with piss poor curriculum, classroom disruptions, large class sizes, inadequate teachers.

Really shameful that even after so many years of having URMs at every single level of MCPS administration, they have actually not done anything for URM students. The achievement gap has just widened.

What is URM?

It’s shocking that that’s all the mail in votes there were. There were over 100,000 sent out is what I read!

The ones being mailed back still have until July 29th to arrive (assuming they were postmarked by yesterday).

Plenty of men ran. Not sure about the ethnicity of those who ran, but sure if someone ran with the goal of expanding G&T education etc I'd vote for them.

I looked for any candidate statements on this and they were all focused on helping students at the bottom rungs of achievement. I care very much about this goal, but I don’t think it needs to be done at the expense of kids in, or seeking to be in, gifted programs. Not a single candidate mentioned this in the various candidate statements (eg Bethesda Magazine, etc). Narrowing the achievement gap should not be achieved by fixing the top level so that it won’t get higher. (Maybe we need to stop talking about the achievement “gap” as if the gap size is all that matters…)

^^mentioned gifted programs.

Yang’s current lead over Joftus is striking. Didn’t think she was the hands-down favorite, esp w/Joftus being an incumbent. Her lead seems more considerable than those in other districts, too . What happened? Is her being an Asian female a considerable selling point for some (esp Asian) constituents?

I have the same question when I saw the number this morning. I thought if she led, it would be a very small margin. I guess people are fed up with the current board, and Joftus as an appointed member with huge conflict interest isn’t interest.

Go Apple ballot, go!

I am glad that most incumbents are not leading. If they come in 2nd, parents need to send them packing in November for the better future of all students.

I think folks recognized that Joftus had an opportunity when he was appointed to do something to bring fresh ideas and oversight that matched his depth of experience with Ed issues. Instead, he didn’t do anything and just rubber stamped whatever MCPS brought to him and the rest of the Board. In talking to friends and neighbors who voted for Yang, it seems like it was mostly a vote against Joftus and not necessarily a specific thing about Yang that drew a lot of votes.

I'm not sure I understand the differences in the number of precincts reporting for the BOE races. Since voters in any precinct can vote in all four BOE races, why are the results listed this way?:

On the Montgomery County results page, the At Large race has "(246 of 258 election day precincts reported)"

District 1 has "(48 of 53 election day precincts reported)"

District 3 has "(56 of 58 election day precincts reported)"

District 5 has "(49 of 49 election day precincts reported)"

PP here. My precinct is within District 4, for example, and I voted for in each of the four races. So why aren't the district races' totals coming from all 258 precincts, just like the At Large's?

I also have the same question. It doesn’t make any sense.
