2022 Olympics

This is going to go down as the worst Olympics ever, right? Between COVID and the corruption and the ski crashes and the toxic waste ski jump venue?

The conditions for the isolated athletes sounds horrible:
Russia's Vasnetsova used Instagram to complain about the food she received in her quarantine facility. On Feb. 3 she posted an image of what she claimed was "breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days already." The photo consisted of some plain pasta, charred meat, an orange-looking sauce and no apparent vegetables.

"I've been getting this for breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days now. I've lost a lot of weight and my bones are sticking out. I can't eat anything else, I don't know anything about my corona tests," Vasnetsova wrote in her Instagram post that has since been deleted but not before it circulated in Russian and international media. "I only sleep all day because I don't even have the strength to get out of bed. I only eat three handfuls of pasta a day because it's just impossible to eat the rest of the food," she wrote.

They require two negative consecutive tests. The tests are at 7AM and 7PM. He failed to test negative in time.

It sucks. Cross your fingers Chen is negative.

Because China has more stringent Covid restrictions than no-lockdowns U.S.

I mean it is China. None of this should be surprising. It’s like trying to pet a Dingo and the getting upset that it bit you. Everyone should have boycotted.

Exactly! Lots of sketchy stuff going on with testing and quarantining. Seems really messed up that the host country can test you and ship you to mandatory quarantine where you can’t train and they supply the food. Western countries are stupid and passive…do you think the Chinese and Russians would send us their top athletes and allow us to isolate and starve them at will.

OK, conspiracy theorist. Hint: if they really wanted to screw the U.S., it would be their near-unbeatable star, and not the notoriously inconsistent under pressure Vincent Zhou, who would have popped positive and been whisked away to quarantine.

I hope the rest don’t end up positive. Does this mean Ilia Malinin gets to skate?

No, because Vincent already competed in the team event, they aren't allowed to use an alternate for him.

That's another blow. That really sucks. They should have made an exception this year b/c of COVID and this was bound to happen.

There's a lot of corruption. Which instance are you referring to?

That is dumb. They should change the rules due to COVID. Jeez.

This is what happens when the Olympics take place inside a dictatorship. They are sending people to horrible places when they test positive.

They already published the start order. Once they publish the start order they can’t send an alternate. Plus there the men skate tonight so there is no chance he could get there in time.

REALLY worried for the rest of the US figure skating team

All this covid testing for the sake of testing is just insane. If he doesn't have symptoms and feels well enough to compete he should be able to skate.

I am heartbroken for him and sadly you know he won't be the last athlete who gets screwed by over testing.

I feel terrible for him. It’s a solo event - he should be able to skate alone. Poor guy.

"This absolutely does not define me as an athlete, as a person," Zhou said. "I am more than just another positive COVID test. I am more than just another face in the crowd."

I agree. Let the guy skate and then throw him in that horrific quarantine hotel until his next event. He's waited 4 years for this. I think it's crazy that they're kicking him out for testing positive especially if he feels fine and can compete in his event. And they should be banned from ever hosting the Olympics again from the way they're treating athletes in isolation. Why are we allowing communist countries to host the Olympic games? They shouldn't be allowed.

+1 China is horrible. They got us into this mess to begin with!

Not sure why they were allowed to host to begin with.

Because the IOC is disgusting and completely corrupt.

And because Almaty would have been a poor option too.

PP is wrong anyway. It has nothing to do with the team event. The alternate can’t be used because the skating order draw for the mens short program already took place. That’s the reason.
