Probably true if you compare averages between the countries but not in relation to big cities. Women from large cities in Russia are not "needy" even by the US standards. Many own apartments with no mortgages, and real estate in big cities is same value as in the US big cities, if not not expensive. I still own 2 apartments in Moscow which I use for travel and to rent out, and can go back anytime. This is around $0.5mm in net equity that I owed since age 23, vs average US home equity by retirement of around $150K. |
maybe he likes being a "sub". I knew a few guys who had mail order brides, some from Asia, some from EE. I only knew a few long enough to know how the marriage ended Russian bride - she walked as soon as she got her green card. Poor guy. Asian bride - divorced abusive husband once she got her green card |
You kept talking about large cities as if outside of Moscow there is anything of value going on elsewhere in Russia. Even in Moscow, it's a tiny fraction of kremlin-connected people who , thanks to their embezzlement and corruption live large. Stop trying to act like some of us aren't knowledgeable about Russia. |
Of course provincial Russia on average is worse than US. But girls from villages or small towns are not typically on these international websites. In large cities upper middle class is pretty vast. My family wasn’t connected to Kremlin and we had several properties since Soviet times. If you are familiar with historical events, families were allowed to “privatize” state-owned apartments in early 1990s. We got one via privatization, another one as purchased in early 2000s from savings (had a small IT business). Also had a “dacha” with lake access near Moscow. It’s a typical middle class situation in these cities |
Yep, same here from another EE country. I remember my dad going to the registry office with a trash bag full with our savings to buy our apartment in the 1990s lol. My parents also inherited their parents' land and homes, which are now worth a ton of money. My mom rented her little studio apartment that she bought before she got married - in the former Communist EE countries, everyone was entitled to buy an apartment based on family size, at a nominal price (like 6 months worth of salary, paid monthly without interest). In mine, nobody, and I mean nobody gets married as a mail order bride now. Most uneducated workers work in the service industry or agriculture (such as wineries in France) during the peak season and then spend the rest of the time at home. The grandparents (who retired at 55 y/o) take care of the kids while the parents work abroad. My brother is much wealthier than I am, and I have an Ivy degree and make over 200K/year. My SIL thinks we have such a c*rappy quality of life here. What people don't get in this thread is that, even the poor EE own their house outright, the food is cheap and good, childcare and healthcare are free, college education is free, so the quality of life is significantly better. Property taxes are very low. |
| I am from Moscow but I do agree with the poster above that for same money you can get much better quality of life in Europe vs US. I plan retiring in Spain, Portugal or Greece. For sure not in the US with it’s crazy housing and medical expenses |
PP, I'm that poster and we bought a beach house on an island in Greece last summer! My H is crazy about Europe and wants to spend part of the year there after we retire. Portugal is very popular with Americans and my McLean neighbor bought a condo there recently - she told me it's easier for Americans to buy there. |
Yes, but the US has way more billionaires than EE, and OP is asking why do these very wealthy American men look for wives in EE. We are not talking about MC/UMC but the Trump kind of wealth. FWIW, I would love to retire in Portugal. Have a friend who picked up her entire family and moved there recently. |

I am so fascinated by this. My BIL married a Russian woman he met online. He was neither rich nor good looking, so I always just assume she was desperate to get to America. I definitely consider that prostitution, and it also makes me feel really sad that she felt she had to do that to get out of Russia (I really like her, truth be told). I do agree with previous posters that the way she acts is super unnatural to me - she fawns over him constantly and is always laughing at his (really bad) jokes, almost as if she thinks she's in a rom-com. He is always pawing at her in a really uncomfortable way.
They've been married 8 years now, so assume she's happy? I just wonder how these women (and men) actually meet online. Are there sites I don't know about? Are the women just trolling facebook? |
| This thread is so vile and racist. Unbelievable. DCUM had really turned into a garbage can, and posters are like rats going through garbage. What a great representation of Americans and in particular DMV. |
+1 White Americans cannot get away with their racism toward POC anymore, so they found a new group of people they can make fun of and belittle openly and it is white Eastern Europeans. |
Russia is a poor country- ranking GDP per capita by country is 81, Malaysia is 82. Ukraine is 135 Mongolia is 131. A middle class life in the US is very attractive to people in these countries( and other countries). Once married their extended family can come over. Some people just want out of their situation. Yes there are websites. Google Ukraine brides. There are a bunch of companies that are “ matchmakers“. Some are legit and other are not. After every war there are war brides. After WW2 German and Japanese brides(and grooms) made their way to the US. |
Condo in Portugal sounds great ! I love Greece, too - I don’t know if there is another place on Earth where you can still buy a private bay for $300k like on some Greek islands |
You are saying your brother in law is ugly and has a bad sense of humor. Maybe she actually finds him attractive and likes his jokes? 8 years is a long time for someone who only married for a green card. How do people meet online? Seriously? There are thousands of all kids of dating websites out there. |
I’ve met a bunch of Russian mail-order-brides and their husbands about 20 years ago through a mutual friend. It was a sad sight: the men were either very old, or very stupid, or both. The most idiotic one was also a russophobe. I guess, he derived pleasure from humiliating her for being Russian? Women were educated and employed but not stunning or overly impressive in any way. 20 years later I had a chance to follow up on them, and all of the couples had gotten divorced. Some women stayed single, others remarried to men similar to them in background, age, and education. |
