My in-laws are reaching a point where it makes sense for them to move to the area and be closer to us, so we can help out more. They are both in their early 80s, but they are “old” for their age. We are starting to research possible living options in the area for them, but are starting from ground zero. Right now they are living independently, but who knows how long that will last.
I see lots of signs for Manor Care. Any experience with that? What about other options in Montgomery County? They are Catholic, so if there is anything church-related, that would be fine. And… their budget is limited. And… they are very picky re: quality. They have only ever lived in brand-new homes! We live in the close-in suburbs (very close to the Silver Spring metro), but I am wondering if finding a place for them in Germantown or there about might be a better deal. What are the price ranges for places like this?Any thoughts or suggestions, experiences, thoughts are extremely welcome. |
| My mom is at Asbury Methodist and we are very happy. Recently she had to have surgery and the rehab is on the same campus as her apartment. |
| Ryderwood Village may have new units. It is not a nursing home though - more a retirement community (not sure the level or levels of care you wanted). It also requires a down payment. |
| PP again. Springvale Terrace Retirement Community near downtown Silver Spring is another option - not as new as Ryderwood, but a possibility. |
| Victory Housing is the Catholic assisted living. The ones I know of are colocated with parish churches. |

Asbury does have a good reputation. Shady Grove also has an assisted living center. Another name that comes to mind is Sunrise. I haven't heard anything about them lately one way or another, but it would be worth looking into. The company that owns Holy Cross hospital has a nursing home that might have an assisted living center. I can't recall the name of the facility. That is catholic. There is a small one I think called Randolph Hills in the Wheaton area. Manor Care is a nursing home chain but I don't know if they do assisted living. Riderwood is in the Beltsville area, but might be close enough to check out. That's all I can think of right now.
I will warn you that you might find yourself sticker shocked at the price. Assisted living is quite pricey and typically insurance doesn't cover it. Also, it isn't covered by Medicare or Medicaid. Years ago when I worked as a social worker (we are talking like 20 plus), the cost was about $115 a day and I'm sure it is much higher now. But, there will likely be a wide variation in prices. Good luck. |
| http://victoryhousing.org/albyron.html . I used to be a nanny near this church in Potomac. I cannot speak to the quality of the facility, but it looks nice from the outside, and is right on the campus of a Catholic Church. |

Maplewood on the Old Georgetown Road has a bus that takes people to Mass at St. Jane de Chantal every Sunday. Other than that, I don't know much about it, but it has a website:

My ILs were in Riderwood. It is a big campus and is a "lifetime care" community. They have independent living, assisted living and nursing home care. My ILs ended up using all three at various points. It is a nice place and the care was excellent. The comfort of knowing that all the care that might be required in the future was really helpful. The independent living was an apartment (theirs was a 1 BR with a den, but there are larger and smaller units too). Some had patios. There is a dinner in the dining room every night that is included in your monthly fee, and you are on your own for lunch and dinner. I think this is pretty typical for retirement communities. There are financial requirements to live there that are stringent because they do make a commitment to take care of you for life. |
Be prepared for sticker shock. My mother's costs are $7500/month for assisted living in the Boston area (comparative COL to here). I think you can expect for pricing to start at about $125/day per person, with no activities of daily living services included in that (e.g. help getting dressed, bathing, meds, eating, etc.). |
| My dad was at Asbury Methodist Village and think it was a good place. I would recommend it. Check how long a wait to get in. Also takes a big down payment. |
| Limited budget and picky don't do well together. I would see a financial adviser with your parents and see what they can spend on care. If it is truly a very limited budget, you might have to go to Southern Virginia to get low cost care. You will not find it around here. |
| Leisureworld... |
My ILs live in Leisure World, which is just a collection of kinds of housing for seniors, with some amenities (a pool, clubhouse). It offers no services at all, none. And it's not on public transportation. Why anyone thought this would be a good housing setup for declining seniors is beyond me. |
| OP, do/will they need services? |
